Default Long-term engine storage

What's the proper procedure for storing both new and used engines? If new, I assume you just keep it in the box in a dry place. If used, put some after-run oil in it and do the same?

I tear them down and clean with alcohol then add some after run oil if it's a long term storage. From season to season storage I just fire up the engine then run out all the fuel.
