Default Glow Plug Selection

Hello! I was just in the process of choosing a glow plug when I relised, I don't know anything about glowplugs. If anyone could give me any suggestions or just general information/tips it would be greatly appreciated. I am running a Thunder Tiger Pro 46 in a Sky Raider Mach 1.

Thanks.

Go with the OS #8 plug. If you are at a high altitude (above 4,000 feet) and the OS #8 doesn't provide adequate performance use an OS #3 plug (this is a hotter plug). As for fuel, I run 10% nitro in all my glow planes (both 2 & 4 stroke) with no problems.

I have had good luck with OS#8s It seems they work the best, I have also had good luck with Tower Hobbies and Fox plugs. I tried Super Tigre plugs and they are crap, I was always changing plugs.

We just got this model. which engine you are using? we are thinking to install OS 35AX in it instead of 46LA (doesnt idle very good) Or 46AX (seems over powered for this model). please suggest?

The .35 AX should fly it well...sounds like a good choice to me.

If you look in the tower catalog they have a pretty good description of what plugs do what in different engines. OS #8 is the number one all around plug for two stroke engines. There F is the number one in use for four stroke engines. I have been trying out different brands of plugs in my four strokes due to the price OS is now getting for there F plug. So far I haven't noticed and difference. I'm waiting to see how long the different plugs last compared to the OS plug, that could be a deciding factor.

If you don't think it's enough power, the .46 will be

If it is really hot in your area, the added power of the .46 might be just right for you? What is the altitude of your air field?

Here in New York the temperatures rarely get above 90 degrees F.

A friend has a Sky Raider I (high wing trainer ) with a TT .46 pro, and that is more power than it really needs. A .35AX would fly it very well indeed...around here...we are only about 500' above sea level.

OS plugs are overpriced.  Fox, K&B, McCoy, and others make plugs that are as good (unless the heat range is wrong) and cost a bunch less.  Not saying OS plugs are bad, just overpriced.  For example a Fox Gold will replace an OS #8 in most engines.  K&B 1L or Fox RC if a slightly cooler plug is needed.  Might want to try the Thunderbolt plugs from Hobby People as well.   The Thunderbolt four stroke plug is hotter than an OS F.

At the moment I'm testing the Thunderbolt four stroke and I have already tested out the Horizon four stroke. The H plugs I had were a mistake in an order and I was sent a sheet of 12 instead of just one plug. I was just filling in an order for shipping. I gave some out to friends to test too. They are great, don't seem to last as long as the F but at half the price?? The Thunderbolt cured a idle problem I was having with my YS 1.20. Again, at half the price?? I want to order a few of the YS plugs, I have a feeling OS makes them for YS and again, half the price. YS only recommends the YS or OS type F plug. Go figure.
