wing and engine incidence
 
Help please,
We are building a couple sport scale 81” all composite Spitfires.
My question is a general one or two. I understand the wing should have a positive incidence, were should we start? 1-2 degrees? Also the motor I understand it is common to have a little down and right thrust. Were should we start 1 or 2 degrees each? I know without knowing more about the plane this may be difficult to answer, we are looking for ball park starting points.

Hi hydro. Saw both your posts. Can't help with canopy, but I make canopy track. As to the incidence, perhaps more important is the relationship between the wing incidence and the horizontal stabilizer incidence. I think if you start with a degree of wing incidence, with 0 deg. for the stab, it will hit a fairly neutral area. I'm sure there are others out there with more experience with the Spit, as I have only built one, and that was about 30 years ago! I had trouble with the kit I built, as the plans had the cg in the wrong place! Another simple solution is to email Dave Platt at [email protected]. If anyone can answer your question HE CAN!! Hi!
I'm currently building two Brian Taylor 84" Spitfires Mk 9 and 19 from plans and the plans show the engine to be mounted straight forward without side or down thrust . Wing is mounted sligthly positive as most full size airplanes (could be 1-2 degrees) and wing has wash-out in the tips which is very important both in fullscale as in models. Stab is mounted 0 degrees to the engine.
I have studied many 3-plan vievs of the full scale Spitfire and no Spit up to Mk 9 has any side or down thrust. It wasn't until the Merlin engine was replaced by the bigger more powerfull Griffon in the later Mk's the spitfire had down trust.

a good comprimise on wing incidence would be 1 1/2 degrees with engine at 0 and 0 and stap at 0.as stated above 1 to 1 1/2 degrees of wash out at the tips will be a blessing.

We currently have 0 degree on the rear stabilizer and a 2 1/2 degree positive on the wing with a 1 1/2 degree wash out. It sounds like maybe we should start with a 1 degree negative and maybe 1 1/2 degree right on the engine.
What do you think?

The full size spit had 2 degrees pos. at the root in relation to the stab and minus point 5 (-.5) at the rib where the aileron ends. I scratch built mine to scale specs and it flys great. Engine is 0-0. It is a mark V. The later marks had minus 30 MINUTES at the tip, same +2 at the root. Hope this helps.
