Ofna Buggies
Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and to RC in general. I have a simple question about getting into the buggy scene. I was looking around for a good kit or rtr buggy set up and I found one that really caught my eye and would like to know what the experienced rc'ers think of it.
Ofna 1/8 Ultra LX Pro RTR w/25
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...57&FVPROFIL=++
Is this buggy a good buggy for a first timer? Is it easy to maintain? Are there hop-ups available for when it's time to move up?
Thanks,
Greg

RE: Ofna Buggies
gemiller - most buggies dont require hop ups per say. other than an engine and radio equipment. what u buy is pretty much what u buy. alot of peeps here love ofna, i personally do not. but this is just a matter of opinion, from one racer to another.
i firmly believe in getting what u pay for. if u can afford a bit nicer buggy, by all means, get one. if u are looking RTR, take a hard look at the GS Storm Pro, and the Kyosho Inferno 7.5sports. both are great beginner buggies that can easily be raced when ready.
As for as the ofna products, if u do want to go that route, step up to the hyper 7rtr, or hyper 7pbs. both of these are much more race ready, come with a far better engine, and will hold up better on the learing curve.

I wish I could afford something like that. Being 16 and working for 5.15 an hour, paying car insurance and paying to keep my car running is hard work. I don't think I would be able to get that much money together I was looking for a used buggy but I couldn't find one quite in my price range. That's why I starting looking at the cheaper new setups.

RE: Ofna Buggies
well then spend 30 more and get the ultra mbx pro.
a more sturdy buggy with some thicker pieces which will hold up better and save you repair money in the future.

gemiller,
I was in your same shoes about 2 weeks ago. If you have a chance go to your local hobby store and look at them. I believe that most people will try to steer you away from this LX and at minimum tell you to look at the MBX PRO RTR which can be had for about $ 300 on Ebay. Be cautious about the prices on most cars from Tower, more than likely it can be had much cheaper!
I made my mind up on the new 9.5 Violator RTR from Ofna but that was around $425.00 If this is in your budget by all means consider.concider.

Do you think it would be worth it for me to try my luck at buying a good used one that is in my price range or just buy a cheaper new one?

gemiller - one thing that is very important about purchasing used rc nitro stuff.
u must assume that ever used engine is not going to run. there is NO way of knowing how new, or how abused the engine is when u buy something used. even starting it and running it wont give u a good indication, ecspecially if u are new to the hobby. stick with new - u will be happier in the long run.

Gemiller,
Nitroaddict brings up some pretty valid points. When you buy a used buggy, you're really rolling the dice in that you never know how the person before treated it. You can very easily spend 250.00 on a used buggy and then realize when you get it that you need to spend another 150.00 just to get it to run right. If you want a quality buggy at an affordable price, the Ultra MBX Pro is definitely the way to go. For 300.00 to 330.00, you get a fast, durable NEW buggy which is ready to go right out of the box.
If you had the extra $$, the Violator would definitely be worth looking at as well as a bunch of other buggies. The easiest way to go about making your decision is to figure out how much you are willing to spend and then see which buggies fall into that price range. Also, don't use Tower to gauge your pricing. You can usually find the same RTR kits on Ebay for quite a bit less than Tower.

ShOzz,
You're giving it away in my book. Normally, I would stay away from used equipment (as I mentioned previously) however you seem to take really good care of your RC's and the life and times of your MBX has been chronicled pretty extensively here at RCU. If I was looking for a MBX Pro, I would definitely be giving you a call! It's a good opportunity for someone looking to get into 1/8 scale buggies to get a quality ride with lots of extras for a heck of a price.

RE: Ofna Buggies
I will throw my $.02 in the hat here. The Ofna buggies are a great bang for the buck. They are very durable and you typically get allot for the price. The other thing to consider is the price on parts, replacement or hop up. Ofna parts seem to be very well price compared to the Kyosho and GS Racing parts. Also the Storm seems to be about the weakest buggy you can buy. They are awesome on the track, but don't seem to stand up to the punishment as well.
I will laso vouch for ShOzz, he is a fellow Team Houston RC member and a T-Maxx Freaks member. To bad he doesnt throw in a free tatoo with the purchase.
