Default Servo Question?

I just bought a new Ofna Hyper 7 PBS and I am not sure to what servo I should use for the steering. I have seen people say at least 100. oz. But what I want to know is, would it be better to run a high torque or high speed servo? Do you recommend using digital over analog? And what do you run in your cars and what are your recommendations? I am looking to spend under a $100 U.S, but if I need to go higher I will.

A good combo of speed and torque would be the Hitec 925MG (.08 transit / 103 oz/in torque @ 6V). The Hitec 645MG - is also a good servo (thats what I run) however it's a little slower than the 925MG but has more torque (.20 transit / 133 oz/in torque @ 6V). The 925 is 89.00 and the 645 is 39.00.

Wow thats a big jump in price there. I am mostley wanting this buggy for some minor back yard bashing. Nothing campared to what you do. And racing at my local track. Its a small track that a hobby shop near me thru together nothing to serious. So I am not really trying to get into racing all that much. So would it be safe to say that I should go with the lower price servo with the higher torque?

If you don't plan on doing any serious racing, go with the 645MG. It has a ton of torque and it's reasonably priced. I run a 645MG in my PBS and I get around the track just fine. There's no need to shell out the extra $$$$$ unless you plan on getting into real competition.

the 925 is a coreless servo, that is why the price jumps so much. i agree with dagass, if not racing, no need for anything better than the 645. DO NOT get a digital servo for bashing, as they will attempt to self center all the time, and wreck havoc on you rcvr battery pack

Nitroaddict-

Can you go a little more in-depth on your last statement regarding centering? Why just bashing and not racing?

I'm asking because I was at the LHS today and I spoke with someone who seemed knowledgeable enough and he didn't try to force a particular product on me - thus his credibility was left untarnished, for now. I was told that the Hitec digital servos have a difficult time centering consistently. The rub is, I just bought a pair of HS-5645MG digital servos to handle the steering on my two buggies. Long story short, now I'm a bit concerned I should have bought a different brand. I'm not bashing Hitec at all. I've run the 645MG's in the past with great success and would definitely use them again for bashing. And I really didn't want to drop the dough on the JR DZ8550's ($115 a piece - ouch).

I'm not asking for product endorsements, but if I'd like to go digital what is flat-out the most durable, economic steering servo for 1/8 scale buggies? Yes, I'm a little concerned with battery drain, but lets skip that for now (I have plenty on the shelves ready to use).

Thank you in advance,
-SlingItX

sling - digital servos have a tendency to self center. This is a problem when the wheels arnt going straight alot, as it puts a serious load on the batteries. This is more prevelent in bashing than racing, due to the fact that rarely are the tires going straight while bashing, since the grass ect pushes them around. it isnt so bad for racing on a track, as the clay is usually slippery, but it still becomes a problem. Also is worse for bashing since when racing you will only have ur car on a few minutes at a time, while bashing can become an all day thing, where battery life is more important. The best steering servos are the coreless ball bearing, metal geared type. These offer transit speeds almost equap ti digital servos and are not self centering. A perfect example of this type of servo, and my personal choice, is the Hitec 925(hi torque) and Hitec 945(hi speed).

Nitro, I got myself a digital HiTec for steering, would this power drain be the same if I used it for throttle brake instead?...

basically should I pick up one of the servos you mention for steering and use the digi for throttle brake, also which would you recomend for steering, high speed or torque?

i dont recommend digital servos for rc cars. However, if you already have them, feel free to use them, just keep an extra pack handy if needed.

Hi torque is more important than speed on 8th scale buggies. Speed is more important than torque on 10th and 8th scale on road.

It looks like my car should be arriving sooner than expected. Much sooner actually. It should be in some time today or tomorrow but its about 2 hours from my house now and says its on the truck for delivery so I am expecting it anytime. Looks like I need to make a trip down to the hs to pick up my servos and nitro. Wasnt expecting it untill a week from now. But sooner the better. Now its time to stock up on some extra pull starters. Or will the silver top ofna starter box start my .21 8 port?
