I just ordered the Associated box, Don't know if it's the best but like you I couldn't find any good info. The Associated box looks fine and if it's not strong enough I'll uprade the motor. Oh yea, it's for a WS7 in an inferno.

For hot rod engines most say the Mugen twin 550 box is the best. I wouldn't know as I've never owned one. I have however had the OFNA big blue box (now the chrome top box) as well as the Crono stainless box and both are adequate for hot rods as well as sport engines. Both of these boxes feature a large single 12V motor and can be configured to run off of a 12V gel cell, twin sub C stick packs, or an external 12V source. I prefer the single 12V box simply because there is less to go wrong with a direct drive single motor rather than a twin 6V motor/belt/starter wheel arrangement. Many will say the single 12V motor lacks the torque to turn over hot rod engines, but I have never found this to be the case. I've started OS RG's, RB WS7's, C4's, C5's, and all manner of Novarossi based 21's with a single 12V box and never had a problem.

The big 12volt box is the only way to go, the single, direct drive, high torque 12 volt motor has far more torque than any twin 550 powered box....lot less trouble too. Just don`t bother with the glow ignitor/power panel thing, they only work well for a little while and then they cause trouble, so its not worth the extra cash.

I've been finding that my twin 550 motored starter box just hasn't got enough torque unless I use an external big 12v battery so a single 12v motor box sounds like the way to go, thanks for the help

I personally have the OFNA MULIT BOX. Its slim, light, and has a single 12v motor. Never had a problem with it. I h ave also used another racer's Dynamite box and thought it was top notch as well. Just make sure whatever box you get, has a single 12v motor and not two 550's.

I have that box and it is kind of gutless with any sort of p/s resistance. I think it's the "sport" batteries I have though. I was told that my box would be fine with a good 12v gel cell. What do most people run for batteries in that box?

What do you guys run for batteries? I think starter box choice is only half of it right? You need good batteries to back it up? Right?

Thanks,
RobH

rob, alot of guys i know use a standard 12v battery, but not me. I went the stick pack route for several reasons:

1. 14.4 volts instead of 12v. I get more power
2. box weighs almost 3 pounds less - this is a big difference.
3. I can charge 12cells on my peak charger, so i can fully recharge my box in 45mins at the track
4. Even with the cheapest packs (dynamite 2400ma) i get full day's racing out of 1 charge.

I've got one. It's got enough power, as long as a 12v gel cell is powering the motors and not two stick packs. I think it would be a better deal if you get an Ofna single high torque motor starter box that's not built yet and build it yourself. It's really easy, believe me.

How would I go about converting my Ofna blue/Chrome Top box from a 12V gel cell to a twin 7.2V stick. Is this possible? I would definitely prefer that since I can charge two batteries at once with my Super Brain 969 and I already have 3000mAH batteries from my E-Maxx days.

tkbr - I have the ofna multi box, and use twin packs. just take a tamiya connector, attach the bare wire ends to the switch and motor, attach the clip end to a split connector and your done.

+ goes to switch, - to motor

Whoa... talk about torque! I switched over to the twin 7.2V batteries instead of the 12V and I am already sold. Tons more power than the 12V. I am putting the box back together tonight.

If you go from 12v gel cell to 14.4 volt packs aren't you trading amps for volts? Where volts will make the wheel spin faster but amps will give the wheel more torque? Amps can also translate into longer battery life, but I think with the high-end engines (like the RB's) you really need the torque, no?

Then again, at only 1500ma, the batteries that came with my box from ebay don't have many amps compared to the 2400ma ones NA is running.

Is the packs vs gel cell an old debate for Starter Boxes?

I'm no electrical engineer, (I even wired my batteries in parrallel for my first try at a Y-adapter last night... Duh that didnt work) I am using 3000mAH batteries and it did spin the motor like crazy but I guess there is no way for me to measure torque. I guess I will see how it does on a new C5 within the next couple of weeks. All I want is something that is easier to charge than that freaking 12V. And the box is much lighter which is also a plus.

a gel cell will preduce more amps than the packs. This works well for cheap boxes or breaking in an engine. For even more power, i will break in engines with my box attached to my car battery. However, with a properly broken in engine, the twin stick packs will easily turn even the heartiest big block over with ease, and due to the increased voltage - much faster too. Along with this is the added benifit of the lighter weight and ease of quick charging .

Odd, I don't know if it's just my starter box, but the two stick packs seemed to have less torque then my gel cell. I experimented with all my stick packs (I used to race electrics) and found that no combination seemed to compare to the gel cell. In my case, it probably is a matter of amps.

as mentioned in my previous post, stick packs will produce LESS torque due to less amps, but create a higher speed for the wheel.
