I too had a original RTR,
I replaced the rear and center dog bones with CVDs, this makes it transision from breaking to exelleration smother.
Also, a very cheap upgrade if you haven't done it yes is to rebuild the Diffs with silicon diff oils. doing that keeps the wheels on the ground where they need to be.
One other upgrade that is nice is the Pro or PBS style chassis braces, the original ones get loose over time.
the other Pro stuff, graphite servo tray etc. just takes a little weight off the car.

get a decent steering servo .. assuming the one you got is standard rtr ... you can go a hitec 645mg for $40.00 you will enjoy steering in the right direction..
