i baught one of thse duratrax temp gauges. and i wanted to no if u would get a amore accurate readig if u took teh temp from the side of the actual block. i was thinking this because it says that when the temp gauge is 2 in away from the head bnutton (where u want to measure the temp i think) that teh temp gauge is looking at a circle of about two inches wouldnt this lead to an inacurate reading. jsut ur thoght on where too measuer teh temp with a temp gauge that has a 1*1 ratio area to distance away

you can temp with the gague right on the head or just under the head on the side. more convenient from the top. i have one of those in car ones ... its wrapped around the base of the cooling head.

You will find the infra red gauge don't work so well on bright aluminium....so at least the head shot down to the plug gets the emission from the bottom of the cooling head. As the plug top is very shinny you will not get an accurate reading from it. If you don;t believe me try reading the temperature of a stainless steel kettle when boiling....much lower than 100 degC

Yes set the gauge to "hold max" temp and place it above the head and "shoot down" at the plug. I assume your cooling head is anodised blue/purple...black is the best colour (I think) for the infra red gauge to work at it's best. You can trim your gauge reading with its emistivity (I know I got the spelling/name wrong) setting for varoius colours. I would be concerned if I had an aluminium head (no colour) as I think your gauge would read low.
