At the same time, it's not always an advantage if you use the material that has the highest strength. What is more interesting is how they behave when a higher force is applied. Cf is very strong, but tends to crack under high forces, whereas Al will bend and therefore sometimes can be bend back in shape.
pro_steve - this is another area where you obviously are not a pro....

It's not a simple question. Are you talking about an item of the same size made in each material, or where you use each material in the way it's best.

Volume for volume steel's the strongest. The advantages of the others are they are lighter and so you can use more materail for a given amount of weight. That's why pound for pound carbon is stronger than steel.

RE: Cheap carbon parts
i have a big sheet of carbon fibre and i was thinking of trying to make a piece for my car. If it works i would try to make shock towers.

RE: Cheap carbon parts
I'd recommend something more along the lines of a radio tray (2mm carbon). When dealing with carbon this thick you need things like a drill press other wise your holes will be off and it will tweak your geometry just enough to make ur car really annoying. The reason I know this, is that I built a few custom pan car chassis. They ended up being far more work then I thought they would be and I was working in a machine shop.

RE: Cheap carbon parts
put some tape on the areas you want to cut or drill...it keeps the splintering effect down......sand all your cut edges down too.....i helps if you can put the CF in a vice when cutting....keep the vice close to the cuts and move it as you need to....this process makes the CF easier to cut but you can only make short cuts each pass...so like Tiracing Tiger said try something easy for your first go at it....
