Default How much is too much?????

When it comes to servos, how much is too much, my Ultra servo blows and I need a new one. It wont turn the wheels on the cement. is 133 torque oz at 6 volts just right or is it over kill????? I'm thinking about getting a hitec 645mg, is this good for the buck or what?

Anything over 80 oz of torque will turn and stop your 1/8 scale car in any conditions what matters after that is the speed and precision.
I personaly run Futaba S 3305 throttle and steering and i have no problems torque is rated at 124 oz-in but others find them a bit slow but i don't mind + there cheap about 35 $

thanks, I think I can find the hitec's for around 33 to 40 dollars, so I think it would be a good investment. I don't race at all, I'm the only guy I know around my area who even has a nitro buggy. But I would like to run it on the street sometime instead of the gravel.

Better buy the Hi-tecs in bulk though, you'll be replacing them again soon.

I wouldn't put anything less than 100oz for steering on your buggy. I use the jr 8800 torque for my steering and it works great. But i don't know about the one you are talking about. i know the jr is around 100 bucks so if some of the guys say that the one you are talking about is ok, you could definately save some money. Just make sure that it will work and that you won't have to buy another one, and hence waste more money.

I would go for the Futaba s3305 instead of the Hitec. I have a Hitec 5645 as steering servo on my LX Comp, but I wouldn't buy one again. Hitec servos just don't seem very durable.
Another possibility is the JR z650m.

I have had good performance from my HS645MG steering servo, it's been very durable, been in hundreds of crashes and never skipped a beat...

On the other hand my HS525BB throttle servo burnt out on me on day one. Though I think it was my fault, left the RX on and the failsafe was set to apply full brake rather than idle/slight brake, and it cooked the servo motor...

Not bad cheap servos.

I've used Hitec 645's but they seem to have a problem with centering correctly. It's not that they don't have the torque, they just lack speed and accurate re-centering capability. They do fail quite often too in my experience. A nice high speed/high torque servo, while expensive, will make your car feel like it's on rails. They're a little pricey up front but after going through a couple of $30-$40 servos you'll be kicking yourself for not doing it right the first time. Brake/throttle servos take a beating on 1/8 too. Dual brake setups will help but I usually run my best "strongest" servo on the throttle/brake side. After running numerous 645's I finally said **** it and bought a couple Airtronics 94358. I have stripped out one of the plastic gears on one but the replacements are cheap, like $4 for a pack. I'll never go back to cheap servos, no way!

I run Hitec in all my RCs' except one. BUT! DOn't use the 6 series servos (625, 645, etc...). They have the 3 pole motor which is the weak point of the servo and is why they are cheap. Use the coreless servo motor servos.
I have used the 5945 for 3 years now and it has yet needed to be fixed. My 925 is working great but I can't say the same about the 645 I had. It didn't last long at all.

That's why they don't center well too.

For steering go with ATLEAST .15 ad 130oz! I'm running Futaba S9350s, now they were a pretty price but the difference is AMAZING! But I'll be going to the Airtronics .10/200oz one soon for steering!

When it comes to steering you can NEVER have to much Unless your sacraficing speed for torque [:@][:'(]

http://www.airtronics.net/2004_servos.htm 94358Z ERG-VB High Torque Servo

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=++&search3=Go

It's probably THE best steering servo period.

I run the hitec HS-5945MG as the steering servo. Never had a single problem. I bash the hell outa it too, never strips. It drains the rx battery kinda fast though.

HS-5625MG , is faster than the 5645 , use that for steering , again do not get the 6 series , coreless is the way to go

I was stupid and didn't listen to all those who says keep away from Hitec. I bought a 5645 (my lhs only have Hitec) and it lasted less than two months as a steering servo[:@]

Airtronics, KoPropo or Futaba are going to be my next. No more Hitec.

I use the regular $10 servos (some of them are tower hobbies and others are JR brand) for all my servos needs, nitro, electric, or marine.

Very durable, never break, and cheap. save you money and try them.

Yes of course i use 1/8 scale buggy (see my profile models), i know that hi torque, hi speed servos are better when it comes to serious racing, but i never came across any servos problems even during an intermediate level racing. I have been reading recently a lot about people investing in very expensive servos, which i think it is a waste of money.

I've tried a bunch of servos....I actually had good luck w/ the 645 & 625MG servos.....but the Hitec Digitals I've had 3 bad right out of th ebox...in a row.....after that I just bit the bullet and got the JR 8611 for steering and the Futaba 9351 for throttle...the JR is rated at 260oz and .14 sec......I have run over 12 gallons each on 2 separate RCs (truggy and 1/8 scale) w/ these servos on both and have yet to need repair on either....they just work....cost is a little high but when I see guys replacing Hitecs and low end servos 4 times to my 1 I can see the value in the cost.....

Marwan.... I find it hard to beleive you are racing w/ stock servos...not saying it's impossible just saying it's hard to believe.....the stock Futaba wouldn't even stop my buggy.....let alone take one good triple jump.....

My first buggy was a mayhem rtr and when i replace the steering servo with a 8800t and the improvement was unbelievable. Anyone who says that a good steering servo is unecessary obviously hasn't driven a buggy with a good one.

sorry to jump in like this but since we are all talk about servos.... does the futaba servos come with universal connector? I only have airtronic, JR receivers and they don't accept J connector but I do want to give futaba servos a try. And I don't want to trim the J connector to make it fit ( make it look ugly [:@])

The upper end Hitec's are just as good. Even in the digital 6 series servos have the 3 pole motor!! So don't get the 5626, 5645, etc. Get the 9 series (925, 5925, 945, 5945, and etc..) that have coreless motors. From my personal experience Hitec has the best customer service than any of the others.
