I wouldn't risk running an engine with a broken (chipped) piston.

I cut my pistons anyway so technically this would be similar.

Apparently he did, that's the point of the thread. But I doubt very much that anyone would punt out a damaged engine, I suspect a bit of butchery during the stripping of the mill.

RE: will this affect performance?
Well I know for a fact that Donbeatya broke the piston by mistake while he was trying to remove the backplate. He contacted Chris from CEO and Chris offered to help him out by modding and fitting a brand new piston/sleeve for him at no (labor) charge. Sounds like first class service to me.
Kemo I am very curious as to why you believe that the CEO mods "aren't pretty by any means"... have you ever even seen one before? If so who's was it? Please explain. I work side by side with Chris and help him with some of the engines and his work is top notch. His engines are available at www.amainhobbies.com as well as www.acehardwarehobbies.com and www.tkocompetitiondev.com Do you think that these top level stores would be dealing with Chris if his mods weren't any good?
The owner of A main hobbies himself runs a CEO mod. Let us know if you want us to get that STS engine up to speed for you...

Well, of course a broken piston will affect perfomance. You have to make sure that the piston is at TDC before you remove back plate. I pesonally only run CEO power mods. His quality of cuts is that of some of the best surgeons in the world. At last check on E-Bay, Dadders was even selling CEO power mods engines. KEMO - I can't think off hand of any major hobby shop that sells STS, so your opinion does not count. At the indoor gas champs in South Jordan, UT, January 19-21 it was a CEO power mods engine that Ronnie Gardner was running for his 3rd place finish in the expert a-main. He had not even qualified for the a-main until Chris O'Donnell from CEO Power Mods loaned him an engine to run the fourth round of qualifying. When the Ninja was returned to CEO the labor was free, and the parts were sold to Mike at cost.
