make sure the backplate is really tight, and replace it if you have to. make sure the engine head is also really tight in the back. ive had it leak from there also.

Replace the pullstart and/or put new gaskets, replace any bearings that also need replacement. Silicone seal the backplate. This is regular maintenance for a nitro engine, there's no need for a new one if it runs great and has great compression.

put some red RTV sealent around the backplate, and on the the edge of the pullstart to keep dirt out of the starter.

out of the backplate? the easiest way is to take a dremel with a cut-off wheel, and cut a slot in it so you can use a flat head screwdriver. IT works very well, is by far the easiest method (compared to some people reccomending drilling the bolt, and re-tapping it) and ive never had to use any other method.

the bolts are in-set in the backplate so i cant get a cut off wheel on it..what about a tiny ez-out?
the kind you drill in to it and use a reverse thread screw thingy to get it out?

could just be your header leaking at the gasket[8D]

after replacing the gaskets, how about doubling the springs? i made mine doubled in addition aside from replacing with a new exhaust gasket i also put silicon o-ring seal (automotive) on my header, never got a leak ever since then, my backplate is dry and free from oil (this ensures my break disc could perform substantially) except when the exhaust gasket wears off again. if you're racing i prefer the single spring.

use a left hand drill bit and drill it out counter clockwise. you wont have to retap it because the drill bit will grab onto the screw and it will screw itself out
