Those pull starts are known for that. My Mach .28 pull start did the same thing. You have to open it up and wiggle the coil around a bit for it to retract. Also, be very very carefull to put some presure on the coil so it does not unwind fully. If it does pop out, you will have to get a new one bc it is almost impossible to fix.
If you do get it fixed, next time dont pull it all the way. Short small tugs will do the trick.
If you can not fix the problem, get a starter box! So much faster, and easier!

My cousin's hyper 8.5 with the hyper .21 engine. To solve that problem we just buy a starter box (sweet!!!). But before he buy it, we knock with a screwdriver on the pullstarter and the coil goes inside. The part that is spinning, for some reason, it hits on the pullstart's body (inside). Someone told me that is screw's fault and do not overtight them. I done this but it didn't help at all.

you can overcome this problem by grinding the little round locating lug off the end off the bearing shaft. this is where the get stuck. usually when the car has been running for a little while and the shaft expands. another thing you can do when it gets stuck is just loosen off the 4 screws that hold the pull start on and give it a gentle tap. that will do the trick.
this will happen quite regularly as it is a poor design. infact the mach .28 is pretty much a money waster imo.
hope this helps
