They are both very good. The MBX5R is the older design but probably tougher. The RC8 is one of the newer breed of buggies.
Its a tough choice but you could pretty much just go for any as neither will dissapoint.
If you could get a go with each it will help otherwise just pick one.
People say the Mugen MBX 6 will be out soon but I've been hearing this for a looooong time now so I wouldn't make your decision based on that.

I was racing a mugen mbx5 prospec for a good while and was waiting for the mbx6 to come out for ages but got tired waiting and purchased a mbx5r last months have done 1 race with it so far and the difference between the prospec and the mbx5r was huge i didnt expect it just need to get the car setup right then it will be perfect overall i love it so far.
I have never ran a rc8 but it was between mbx5r and the rc8 for me when i came purchase personaly preference it came donw to.

At the level of buggies your choosing from both being excellent choices. You can't go wrong it will come down to driving skills pretty much. Pick one and rip it up. Does your LHS support both buggies? If not choose the one they support. It sucks waiting for parts.

p.s. Just moved from the DC metro in 05 I was in manassas.

In all reality, there is no such thing as an R/C car that will not break. Just something to remember.
