im new to 1/8 racing, and i have a sportwerks mayhem with a .21 motor, dynamite 053MR pipe with spektrum DX3 radio system. by far, the most important thing on my bug, IS THE spektrum radio system. i know i shouldnt be replying to your thread with my level of experience, but if there is one thing i have learned, its that parts and engines come and go, but the radio, is eternal.
These are famous words to live by!!!! I remembered crying when I layed down $150 bucks for my M8 over 11 years ago.... I upgraded to the Pro Spektrum when it came out and still can't get myself to run out and upgrade! I will keep an old Magnum Jr. around just for a loaner or basher, but sharing a race radio is like sharing your wife....

if you get somthing like a hyper 7, it can still be raced, your not going to win, but it will get you a better start.
If you're ever in NC, look me up. And bring your buggy, I love to race, and still run my H7's. Take this with good sportsmanship, no offense intended, but putting something on the line makes any race more tense and interesting. Enjoy!

Check ebay out, lots of good deals on buggies. I picked up my brothers sp2 for 200 and my sons for 250, just rollers with my sons being upgraded with lots of king heads parts and only ran 3-4 times. It looked new with only 2 small scratches on the lower plate. Im not saying get a kyosho, or losi or mugen, thats your choice. Check your hobby shop for parts and go with the brand they carry parts for.
Roller for 200 leaves plenty to build a nice entry level buggy.

The Caster will be your best bang for the buck guaranteed. especially if you are threatening to race. Depending on how serious you get, you can always upgrade anything and everything, but it is not necessary. It is the best choice out of the box as it is designed to get new people racing. It handles like a dream so even newbies can drive faster and harder than with one. Besides, do you really want to be a lemming?

I do not think you can get the Ishima in the US.

I believe the new Caster RTR's come (or soon will) with a GO race engine. You may want to ask on their forum.

Their community is excellent and always very helpful (i own a Caster K8T).
