I think he's talking about the transmitter, not the on-board gear. They make lipos for just about any radio out there...
For example, my M11:

Do you use rechargeable AAs in your radio? That's what I use. I only charge them about every two race weekends if that...

for my receiver I have a couple hump packs. 2 orion 1600s and a trinity / intelect 1500 as a backup. For my radio (airtronics MX-3FHSS) I have a stickman transmitter pack.

You take the plug off of the battery rack inside the battery compartment and remove the rack, it just pops out of most transmitters. You can usually buy them with brand specific plugs on them already. The picture was just to give you the idea of what to use, they do sell them for my Futaba with plug installed.

I charge 2 packs before I go to the track. One is just incase, the other last for 1 1/2 hours practice, then I just throw it on charge between heats just to be safe. A lot cheaper than using disposable AA's.

I use a hampster in a wheel. I just add a second for more power. I used to keep the spares in my pocket but found they would be dead before the A-main. Just my .02 cents.
