Had some wierd temps during break in with my picco. 140-160 to 328 degrees with no more than 1/8th of a turn off of Factory Setting on the high speed needle
I'm thinking air leak.
Wouldnt be the plug, would it.
If so, whats the procedure on finding air leaks, and fixing them?
Thanks

Seal carb to crank case, seal both ends of carb retaining screw, seal back plate. It'll only take a minute or five. Even if it doesn't help your problem, you'll be better off in sealing anyway.

Check the tank lid seal, pressure line from exhuast to tank, check all seals on the exhaust. Check fuel line for leaks, any of these can cause a problem with consistant fuel supply.

Spit or drop a couple drops of water on the top fin or down by glow plug.
1. 212 and below = water will sit with no action
2. 220-250 = water will slowly bowl (evaporate) in about 3-5 secs, will not begin to boil on contact takes about 2 secs to begin boiling off
3. 250-280 = water will immediately began to boil on contact taking about 3-5 secs total to boil off.
4. 280+ = instant evaporation shut your engine off.
Sounds silly I know it's actually very accurate and will always give you the same reading. Check your temp gauge and make sure its not dusty at the laser head.
Phattracker's advice was spot on also seal your engine even if it's new. Did you flush that engine out before you started break in. Meaning did you open the engine up and clean out the metal shavings from the milling process. Don't believe the hype just because it's new does not meant you don't need to open it and clean it out. It's actually quite the opposite because it's new and freshly milled there will be fine particales of metal in engine. Simply take off carb and back plate and glow plug. Flush it out with wd-40 or denatured alcohol put it bacck together sealing it as you reassemble. Gas tank leaks, bad mesh, improper square of engine, air leaks all can cause engine to over heat.

A good leak test is to take the air filter off, plug the exhaust outlet with one thumb and plug the carb throat with your other thumb and with a some fuel tubing attached to the fuel inlet, blow through the tube with the motor submerged in water. Wherever theres an air leak, you'll see bubbles...
