Default Shimming diffs

My CEN buggy is almost a year old and things are breaking. I just replaced the steering shaft ends, the bell and the clutch shoes. Should I shim my diff? What are the consequences if I don't?

Hi mate, If you doent shim your diff your mesh between the teeth will not be tight enough and break off the tip of the teeth. Have fun.

since its been a year and you are now changing your clutch shoes i will guess you do not drive much. your diffs should be fine and should last at least 5 years at this pace. if you do want to shim them there is a large shim that fits over the outdrives of the diffs over the bearing. with the diff out you can add 1 shim to the crown gear side of the diff then put the diff back in the bilkhead, this pushes the diff over a bit so the teeth are "tighter" together. if they buzz a little bit with the bulkhead reassembled you can take out the shim or add one to the other side of the bulkhead so the diff is centered and fits tight. if the mesh is to tight it will cause premature bearing wear or overheating issues, if the mesh is too loose, with heavy load the teeth can slip apart and over time round off the pinion gears teeth as well as the crown gear, then there will be no mesh at all.
