Changing Diff Oil

Just a quick question

When putting new diff oil in the differentials, how full of oil do they have to be? A guy at my track was saying something like: Front diff 70% full, mid diff 80% and rear 90%.

Is he on the right track or do you guys just fill'em right up?

Thanx

I fill mine to the top. When I tighten down on the housing a little lube comes through the screw holes it's so full.

That is the same way I do mine! Seems to work fine for me.

I fill mine just over the crosspins. Thats what I've heard is reccomended in most manuals. Obviously there isnt any way to put too much in since it can't hurt.

I fill mine 90% full just above the cross shafts.

I was under the impression that you shouldnt fill it right up as it expands???

maybe not?

you will get a slightly different effect depending on how much you fill.. the silicone does get fluffed up a little .. more just means tighter.. less just means loser..

When you change the fluids, do you have to clean out the diff before adding different weight oil?

I don't guess you have to, but no more work than it is it wouldn't hurt to pull the cross shafts out and spray everything down with a good cleaner! Besides, eventually little metal shavings are going to get in there and eat up your gears if you don't clean them everynow and then! Just my .02

DONT fill them to the top, it will basicly lock your diff and you will lose the point of having a lighter/heavier oil. Fill them up to just above the cross pins (just over 2 thirds) and then drop a little oil down the slots for the crosspins. There should be no difference in the amount of oil in the diffs, all the same. If you have been filling em 100% STOP NOW because it may really mess with your setup.

guys get "leaky diffs" if they fill them up to far.i fill mine just over the cross pins and put my thumb over the pins to hold them down and turn the diff gears to work some of it down or if you have time let it set for a bit. then get it just over the pins.
