Need help with clutch springs.

Hi guys, I am new to RC and I'm building the RC8 kit. I am up to the step 38-1 where the clutch springs are fitted.

The instruction manual doesnt show how the clutch springs go on exactly. I have taken a best guess, see photo attached (hopefully).

Please take a look and let me know if I have put them on correctly.

Looks good to me. One thing I like to do though, is this. You'll notice that the springs aren't exactly symetrical, one end being longer than the other. I like to put the shorter end on the shoe side, and the long end on the clutch nut. Because the end is shorter, you will get more wear out of the shoes before the spring grinds against the clutchbell.

Thanks. I'll check which way round I have the springs, I didn't even think about that but it makes sense.

Looks as though the RC8 is getting some new Factory AE Big Bore shocks, great news for sure. Just wish they were made available earlier.

well the rc8 be released with big bores already on it fromt he factory? or will it be a hop up only?

also how are the stock shock towers holding up? the c/f ones, I am stuck between this and the hyper 9 , can't decide!

RE: THE ASSOCIATED RC8 THREAD!

The Factory Team CF shock towers (kit stock) are PLENTY durable. Trust me, I don't think I'll ever need to upgrade my shock towers. (Or even replace, for that matter.)
Go for the RC8! [8D]

RE: THE ASSOCIATED RC8 THREAD!

I really like the rc8 because for one its already out and team AE is carried everywhere,

but people say this buggy seems like its built out of glass, and it is VERY fragile.

the hyper 9 on the other hand is a brand new buggy, I dont know how it will handle or how durable it will be.

thopper 05-27-2008 12:38 PM

RE: THE ASSOCIATED RC8 THREAD!

not fragile.

Man, never knew picking out a new buggy could be so tough

RE: THE ASSOCIATED RC8 THREAD!

I don't have any other 1/8th buggies to compare to, but I took my stock RC8 RTR out for its first track session yesterday and it survived some pretty bad hits at speed, including midairs with another buggy, nose-first landings, etc. thanks to my bad driving. I certainly don't think it's fragile. Only thing I've changed is adding a 6V rx pack. My throttle servo crapped out and ended my day early, but no surprise from a $10 RTR servo. Time for an upgrade...;)

I took a look at the link, but when I click the thumbnail for the setup sheet, all I get is code. I'm guessing one has to register for the forum to view it.

Okay, just tried it in IE and it worked. For some reason, Mozilla and that image weren't playing nicely together.

Hey guys been reading the thread lots of good info.
My question is after reading a lot about the front plate breaking and numerous other things, my question is since the buggy has been out for a while, has Ae fixed these problems?
Like if i was to get the ft version, is it alot stonger than the original version before it first came out.
And is it easy to work on, i am also looking at the losi 8 since its easy to work on, and nobody seems to have breakage probs, with them, but im a ae fanboy and would love to have the RC8

RE: THE ASSOCIATED RC8 THREAD!

Snaut

Every buggy has some weak points, especialy when they are first released.
I would like to think that when the Kyosho brings out the MP9 at 850.00
that it will be a truely no upgrade needed car, but I have a feeling that
as soon as it starts to see some major track time even that kit will
still need some help. As far as Losi 8s never breaking? I watched
several go down this weekend again with driveline issues. One
with a bad rear diff and another with a lost pin from a front CVD.
They still have some of the strongest plastic around though.

So to answer your question lets look at some of the teething problems
the RC8 had.

All the first round kits had a poor plastic mix for the A arms and Top Plate.
That was fixed either with the service pack that AE would and will still send
you for free if you have one of the first gen kits, or if you get a later model
kit that already had the later plastic. An early kit will have the smoke colored
tank and the later ones will have the white ones. This was a running change
so not every car with the smoke colored tanks will have bad plastic.

A,B,C and D plates where problems for some people early on. A two dollar
trip to a hardware store that carries metric fastners will fix any problems
you may have. The service pack also has the hardware you need included.

Top Plates where a stupid two piece design that no one liked anyway, AE makes
the best Aluminum one on the market, replace it with that and forget about
it.

The shocks where so,so but the mods detailed on RC10.com will go a long
way for most people. The RC8T will be out shortly and with it will come with
big bores made specificly for the RC8. Yes you can use the Jammin ones
but you will not have near the knowledge base to draw from with those
as you will with the RC8T units. I am very happy with mine after the
emulsion mods but some people just refuse to run a plastic capped
shock on an 1/8 buggy so they are waiting for the RC8T units.

As far as I am concerned AE has done a great job of getting this stuff
addressed as quickly as possible. Brent and Team have done a outstanding
job of keeping the rest of us in the know as far as what the team is using
and what mods they are doing to there cars. If you have not been to the
forum at RC10.com I suggest you make a stop there before you make up
your mind on what kit to buy.

The Good? well the RC8 has one of the best drivetrains around
right now. My car has around 7 gallons on it and the diffs are in great
shape, outdrive cups and bone ends look like brand new, and I have
yet to have one problem with a CVD. Bullet Proof.

No you can't shear off pipe stakes with the front end like you can with
some other cars but it won't eat diffs, burn up servos, sling out CVD pins or puke up
clutches on a regular basis either.

Different cars are going to require different maintinence.

I would have no problems recommending an RC8 to someone that wanted one,
but I would also recomend a Losi or any of the top 5 or so kits just as easily. It really comes
down to what you can get local support for. When everyone local runs
Losi,AE,Kyosho or whatever you have a built in knowledge base to draw from. Your
LHS will carry what they sell, so the most popular car in your area will have the best
parts selection.
