Default Dual air rudder ?

Hi all noticed some airboats have a single air rudder and other airboats have dual air rudders . Is there an advantage to having dual air rudders ? I am thinking about designing another airboat in the 21 inch range with a 8 inch beam and a puller prop instead of a pusher prop . Regards Andris Golts.

Depending on the size of the rudder(s), you may get more effective steering from dual rudders. It comes down to position of the rudder and the size of it. The height being more important than the width of it/them. Generally, the bigger and heavier the boat the larger the rudder(s) need to be. I put dual rudders on my ground-capable airboats. Most of my boats are water only, so only a few have air rudders.

No problem! Here’s my biggest and heaviest boat. I use wet rudders in water(single) and dual air rudders on land. This one has impeccable steering on land as you can see it turns beautifully. It’s too fast with this engine, so I don’t get too carried away.

I found with 2 rudders it catches the prop wash and control at low speeds is fantastic. If 1 centered fin were applied, I'd see a problem with catching enough air would make boat squirly. If the Single Fin were offset to one side that may work really well.
