fixitt......
you may want to rethink that big, black, round , keel bulb you have on the bottom of the hull, it may slow you down a bit........

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
Very nice
Make sure you keep us all updated with completed pics and also maybe a few of her in action too ( and heck ... a vid would be GREAT ! )
One suggestion .... although those MA props are readily available , you might want to get yourself an APC when you get the chance ...
The MA's are good for the smaller motors ( because of lack of low speed torque ) , but for the weedies , you'd be better off with a prop that has some girth to it . I tried the MA and then an APC and the difference in take off power is like night and day . Even though I used both props with the same diameter and pitch , the APC starts her off a lot easier and seems to be kicking back a LOT more air .
What material did you use to make the hull out of ? Very nice setup ... Like the rudder setup a LOT too !

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
I love those big weedeater hulls. I also like the motor mount and have been thinking about the same design on my styrofoam hull that I am working on. Keep us posted on the outcome. Keep the pictures coming. John

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
It looks good. Is there any way that a engine mount can be installed on the front side also? I've done had a small engine come of a vise and just open a big can of whoop @$$ on me. Now have a lot of respect of a swinging prop. Every thing must be done to lock the engine in place.
Get that baby finished up and lets see some action

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
Pro you got me It took me a second to get what you was talking about
TerboBob thanks for the advice, the closest hobby shop is 65 miles away.
lawnsplus I have ben working on that for a long time the mount will hold
McCulloch, Homelite, 25 cc Craftsmans, and the cheap 21 cc green weedeater
brand. Just by drilling the different bolt patterns.
TerboBob, the foam is material I got from a boat builder down here
fiberglass and resin no problem for it. Thickness is 2 inches gos up to 4 inches
Haljmac, thanks for the warning but to late one already came off, no damage
I have run it lots of times on the bench no problem so far.
Action maybe soon!!!!!!

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
Hey FIXITT ...
Wouldn't it have been easier to say that the mount works on ay weedie that has a crankcase cover that bolts on ?
( I bet it won't work on my RYOBI's ... )
( that last statement was meant in a nice way .. )
Any chance of getting a "close-up" of that mount ??????

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
Nice boat fixitt!!!
Is that a piece of thin plywood on top of the foam? It seems to be a lot simpler than a built up hull! Might use that technique for my next one, .40 size boat.( I know, already dreaming up my next project and the first one is not complete yet....
I'll finish the first one, 1/2a, .061 in a few days and hope to start again soon!!!

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
Just some food for thought here ...
On your mount that you showed , can I toss an idea to you ? Get yourself some roofing flashing ( thin aluminum that is used on roofs and is cheap at places like MENARDS , 84 LUMBER and the likes ) , and cut to size and use as a backing for the bolts . That way , you won;t either widen the bolt holes , and or crack the wood . ( just IMO )

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
Thanks TERBObob,
Good Idea, the thing is that I think that I have an over kill
problem. The plate is 5/8 in thick the stand is 1/2 in. Works well on the bench!!!
I still think its too heavy !!!! But it is about the right size I think ???
thin aluminum good idea.. How heavy do you think the boat could be??

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
Actuall ... you can not compare the little guys ( nitro's ) to these big bad boys of torque .
My airboat weighs in at almost 24 lbs RTR ( full of fuel ) and a buddy of mine has one that weighs even more .
He also has a nitro one running a 1.2 4 stroker nitro ( sam size , but a lot lighter than my RYBOI one ) that he thought was "bad" , only to find out that my RYBOI opened a can of "whoop ***** " on his little 4 stroker ... He has to give his a "push" to get her going on flat land ( grass , not gravel . On gravel , he can take off ok , but the grass is a killer to him... )
On the water , his also porpoises pretty bad and won't take any suggestions ( ya know.... one of those really stubborn types - ) So , to make a long story short , my RYBOI cans his up tight on water , land , and snow .... ( again , the snow he has to "nudge" his at FULL throttle to get it moving )
Theres a guy on here in the MARKETPLACE that goes by JJ ( Jerry ) and is from HAYES , KANSAS . He sells props , brand new and used at VERY reasonable prices . ( thats where I get most of mine from since the nearest hobby store is now almost 60 miles away - the closer one , about 30 miles away , closed up shop a few weeks back )
Most of his pricing includes FREE shipping too ! )
Get yourself a BIG BAD boy on there and you WILL see the difference ( APC - anywhere between a 18 and 22 , although you could get bigger and cut her down , but make sure that the pitch is at least 14 but preferrably 16 . )
Oh yeah ... one more thing .... ALWAYS watch when you pull on the pull start . MAN those props hurt the knuckles even when you JUST are pulling the thing over ...

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
TERBObob,
Thanks, for input Ihave another ? for the pull start
problem I took an old 55 gal plastic drum cut it down, put it around
the prop and motor 7 in wide 18 in dia. It reduced the air output
by 1/3 why ? I took the pull start straight up to be safe when starting,
through the "shroud" if you will. so now I'M looking into building a cage!

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
How big ( long ) did you do the barrel section ? Sounds like you might have started to create a DUCTED FAN unit ( like on airplanes ) which , honestly , will not do very good ( I know , I know ... I will probably get a disagreement here , but , honestly , if anyone can show me PROVEN stats , I will be more than happy to change my opinion And we're not talking nitros here either . )

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
Well I done alot of home work be for I started this "thing", Ducted fan
was the result of PROTECTION [] I'm thinking that Ducted fan
would work better if the tunnel was there, but of coarse it is not.

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
I may be able to help with the cage, what is the meassurement from the deck to the center of the prop, and what is the measurement from the center of the prop to the tip of the prop. I have some S.S. tubing that works great for the roll cage.

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
I'm sorry , I think you might have misunderstood me .
What I meant was that you might have went a bit too big on the protection ring . ( front -bow to transom distance ) And in turn , created a very minute ducted fan which in turn means you loose thrust coming off the tips of the blades.
Its kinda hard to explain , but maybe HALJMAC or PRO can do a better job than I am . [&o]

RE: MY FIRST TRY AIRBOAT
That is a hard one to explain. I don't think I could explain any better, but can give something to think about in relation to what you are saying. Take a good look at your prop, lets say a MAS prop. look at how it is made, now look at the blades on the ducted fan, they are almost flat.
Back to the MAS prop. the way it is made, it almost makes its own tunnel as it is spining, now when you add a shrould around it, it makes like a valcum around the tips recirculating the air. Instead of the air being forced back its making little circles.
Now with the Ducted fan, being almost flat, the air is trying to move outwards, this is where the shrould comes in, to catch the air and force it back.
Now for the best part, I have no proof that this is correct, this what I get from studying the shapes.
