Default Just how are you doing that,GPS stuff??

Hi All

I,ve really had a great time here for about a week now, reading your posts and in some cases laughing so HARD that the wife asked if I was alright from the other room, with the door closed, while she was watching the tube. You guys really taught me the meaning of "ROFLMAO" It took me quite a while to get that one, but when I finally got it, I did it !!.........Man you guys are killin' me.
Any way, many times since the start of this forum, you all have referred to getting a GPS reading on a particular boat, and I don't know just how you are accomplishing this.
Would someone clue me in please. You're really not "Taping" an expensive handheld transmitter to your boat are you ?? I've done a little powerboating in the past, both air and water props, and I thoroughly understand/appreciate the importance of being able to get a speed reading for doing equipment evaluations.

A big Thanks......And keep up the "Unintentional Humor"....It's the Bomb.....................Wilga12

whats the ROF Before LMAO ??? And yes I believe they are stuffing a GPS inside the boat somewhere - hopefuly a waterproof compartment - cuz everytime I try for maximum speed and I'm talkin EVERY TIME I end up looping it .

I wanted a gps but it adds weight. Looked on ebay for a radar gun and the prices are right in-line with my budget. $ 85.00. The cheapest gps I saw was $ 99.00. I am going with a radar gun in the next couple of days.

Hey Dadkins........................Dave, here. Sorry for the lengthy wait for this response,my Internet service has been down,(probably due to the weather here.)

Unless I've got it figured wrongly, the "ROF" preceeding the rest of the acronym stands for "Rollin' on the Floor" Can anyone else confirm this??

Oh, asmithnc.... Please fill in all the details on the "Radar Gun" I'm all ears,as I'd love to have a gun, I thought that the cheapest one that I knew of was about $200,though.
I totally agree with you on the weight issue. On can not expect much accuracy in a GPS reading when you are adding two plus pounds to the boat because of the trans/reciever.

Later...........................Dave

Thanks Dave, aka Wilga12. I agree a handheld GPS would add a lot of weight. so a radar gun might be a better option.
Where is Brownsville ? I grew up in Bend - I miss Oregon !

Hey asmithnc..............All I could say/mumble while I was reading on the Rad. gun
link was "Wow"..........................Man,I really do wish that I could have mentioned this to Santa, while I was on his lap. And had I known of it, I sure would have.

Thanks so much, I gotta' book mark that one, Wow...prop size evaluations will never be the same again!!

I agree that a radar gun is the easiest to use. I have GPS-ed before on my boats and the added weight (although not that much) did affect the way my boat ran. I just strapped (duct tape) in to the boat and let it ride.

I too will be purchasing a radar gun in the near future.

Thank You for the come back............"S.I."

That tells me that if you'd consider the rad. gun,
then the idea must have as much "Merit" as I originally gave it

Hey Terbo

Your complete, ready to use, Gps Tx/Rx weights 2.6 oz ?? Just how big L x W x H is that devil ?? And how do you get the readings to stay on hold, till you get the boat back to shore after the speed run ?? 2.6 oz that's about the total weight of 8 or 10 business cards...........No??

Thanks..............................Dave

3.3"W x 1.7"H x .9"D

And there is a setting to HOLD MAX speed which can be set to MPH or KPH
And yes . compared to the ETREX ... it is SUPER light ! The ETREX is VERY heavy compared to the FORETREX

Terbo:

Is this unit, the unit you use to GPS any or all of your boats??

I know that it's not very good "Form" to ask the price of things, But can you give me a clue as to whether or not the complete ready to use unit will cost more than the Rad. gun at $85 bucks or so?? I have to admit that I'd be quite intimidated by duct taping a $350 piece of electronics on board an Airboat with me doing the driving!! Especially, since I don't swim!

Thanks............................Dave

OK then,.............................I guess that for the difference, I'd have to think hard on that decision. As I can easily see that the GPS is a much more versatile machine with speed capture abilities.

Any links that you know of where I can do some research ??..................And Thank You

Adios..........................Dave

you can check ebay for them, or just go on google and typ in gps(i found a few places with decent prices that way, though ebay was cheaper)...terbo, is the foretrex waterproof liek the etrex, just wondering my boats are big enough that the wieght isnt a huge deal, just add like 1mph to the reading for the extra .33 pounds its hauling around. also I wasnt looking to spend more than 100bucks...

yes ... its like the ETREX ... ( leakproof )
And for the guys running the foamie hulls , this would be the one to choose . Otherwise .... like you , the ETREX is also a good choice to use ( and a bit cheaper - I've seen them on EBAY for as cheap as $50.00 NEW )
