That's hard to say without knowing the overall dimensions and weight of the hovercraft.
As a hovercraft needs to be light, most builders use foam and balsa for the hull and most of the time even smaller motors (380-280) to keep the weight down.
Google and you'll find a few hoverchraft sites, explaining it all.

i have built the Griffon 200tdx on this site it suggests 540 motors
but i ask does it have to be a special type of motor or will ne do

Do you have pics of your Griffon?
The site suggests the Graupner 600 as ideal, this motor is widely avaible and has more torque than a 540.
As it's about airscrews, I don't think the 600 are absolutely neccesary, a couple of 540 should work aswell (maybe a bit less).
