Default How evil is salt water?

Hi all,

Just wondering, does saltwater do some nasty things to a boat? I would like to tape up all crevices of the hatch, and toss my speedboat (Aquacraft Hammer) in the ocean for a little wave surfing, without ending up with corroding motor cooling coils, and what not.

Cheers,
Sven

Rinse everything out with fresh water when you are done playing in the surf. You can spray something like WD-40 into the water pick-up to block corrosion in the head plus a light spraydown with it on other metal parts wouldn't hurt.

Freakazoid,
How 'evil' just depends on how much trouble you're willing to go to. Like Ron said, rinsing with fresh water is the primary 'cure' for salt water corrosion (LOTS of rinsing - LOL!, and don't forget the stuffing box/drive shaft and rudder post/tube).

Also, just for what it's worth. 'WD-40' is hydroscopic, meaning that if it's sprayed over any moisture at all, it traps that moisture between it's self and metal. That means you ~will~ have rust pits in whatever metal the moisture is trapped against. The 'trick' is making sure that the metal is really dry, absolutely no moisture, and in how the 'WD-40' is applied (don't spray it on).

Sealing saltwater out is 'better' than having to remove it...

I can let my aquarium pump run a whole bucket of water through the coil if needed. I dont think I can put my boat in the oven to get it dry enough. And do the stuffingboxes get "Infected" too? I thought those where supposed to keep any water out, salty or not?

I guess I could pull out all axles and parts and let em soak for a night in some kind of waterbased sollution, and pump a gallon or 2 though the watercooling system? (Dishwater?)

salt water will eat away any steel if you give it the chance. Even with WD40, i go through atleast 1 stuffing tube a yearm on every boat. I forgot to flush out one of my electrics, and what a pain in the ars that was to clean out.

Isnt there some kind of fluid that fights salt water? So I can toss all moving parts in a bucket with that sollution and let my spare aquarium pump run it through the system. Sure would be conveniant.

Its only gonna be 2 weeks a year ill be going on salt though. I want to take it with me to a turkish beach in a nice lagune. You know, rent a speedboat and get my friends to drive it while I skid around on its wake, or sit at the end of the docks with a couple packs just chillin with a nice cold drink and my boat. ahhhh, good times. yes marine stores have the stuffi believe it's called salt away. They use them on real boats, and apparantly work well.
