Let's see:
A new custom long board costs about $1,000. Takes an hour or so to shape and a day to glass.
A new custom short board costs about $500 and usually lasts for less than a year.
Board Shorts about $50
Wet Suit about $250
Booties about $60
Surf Racks, Wax, beach towels, lessons on being an agressive jerk in the lineup etc....

I won't even start in on the cost of sking or snowboarding or golf.

RC Surfing requires alot from the both the owner and the Dude himself.
If you purchase one or build it yourself...... tinkering is required!!!
When your build it yourself you get to tryout all your own ideas and enjoy the results.
Maintenance, enhancing and tinkering adds to the personal satisfaction of RC Surfing.
It's a lot of fun, hard work...... all fun and then you get to go surfing with your friends.

Purchasing a custom, hign end RC Surfer is another way to enjoy this sport.
It takes much longer than an hour to shape and a day to glass our Dudes.
And you are paying for the learned knowledge of what works and what doesn't.
Hours of labor, expensive electronic componets, batteries and a Radio System....
Custom RC Surfers are way underpriced in my opinion.

The choice is yours........ Have fun building it yourself or get a custom RC Surfer. You can't go wrong either way.

There is a lot of pride in knowing that when you are out there ripping and carving the waves up...... It's you doing the surfing!!!!

I dont know if its 'my stage in life' or 'my age in life'.....or simply just so !.

I have surfed most all my life as a casual lifestyle surfer, living on the coast....now teaching my kids to surf..... in the early 90's I raced Inflatable boats competitively (pioneered the sport in SA ) being fully sponsored, later competed in Free Style Surf Stand Up Jet Skiing, for many years , up to 2004..............Yet ............without a doubt.....the actual STOKE of rcSurfing is right up their with them all.....well worth every dollar and minute of time I have invested into it......

So looking forward to honing my rcSurfing skills in 2013 and venturing into a few new breaks......last year this time I was scratching my ass........this year I can at least say I am now scratching my head.....LOL

Oregon Update:
Strong offshore winds bring cold air and awesome conditions to the already large NW Pacific!
Looking alot like country side of Oahu, minus 30 degrees of water temp and plus a few great whites!

Finished the Kyosho Lisa and bath tested than flat water tested at Lake Meares, a saltwater estuary nearby my home.
Bath test showed no leaks, but flat water proved otherwise. Water seeped in from either deck or screws as I could find no other culprit.
But for the 5 minutes of learning to drive, Awesome! really impressed with 3s speed and stock turning.
Tinkered with a few solutions last night, will take a drive to the only local hardware store for new deckscrews and seal material.
Added a little bow wieght to reduce skipping. I know I am where most of you were years ago!

Decided to order one of Doc Surfcurls custom boards forsurfer#2, minus electronics so I can at least say I did something.
(Thanks John, your product and service is state of the art)

Can't wait to actually drop in on a ankle snapper-Billybongo

Looking into your Kyosho Lisa, Is the deck seal the soft original ?
I will send you some seal and screws if you like for Free.
Does the board have stainless steel brackets for the
deck screws to go in to, or the plastic posts with a brass nut ?

I really enjoyed building and modifying my Kyosho surfer. It is a tweakers hobby. But I enjoy that. Cause and effect. Read and do. Its all here and really fun. Going to the beach will never be the same. I just have to find a good way to pack my rc surfer on a plane. LoL

Had a look at your web site !

Could you share more detail about your RTS board with regards to the motor make/ kv - esc - surfer etc.
Is it a - white sprayed finish - or - flow coat finish ?
Have you tested the board with Lipo batteries - if so - does it self right without added weight - if not - were do you add the required weight ?
What is the weight of a complete RTS board, ready to surf ?
What deck seal system are you using
What is the price for 'just the board and deck- with fittings - without fittings ?

Do you have any current surf footage to share ?

This is the 3s lipo I have been using in lisa, Curls says it will fit in his new production board.

second flat water test today, less leaking, maybe just the prop shaft. Happy with the performance , just need to keep it dry.
John thanks for the offer on parts, I got the screws figured out, 5 mm 80 pitch 16mm long with a nylon then neoprene washers, I cut 5mm lengths of silicone tubing and stretch it on to the top half of the threads. when tightening the deck on, the sili-tubing fills the deck holes solid,

so the deck seal is still questionable, the one i got today is vinyl-seems waterproof and sticky.
I need to learn how much grease is enough to stop water from getting up the stuffing tube,

Happy New Year !, Ya it's only 5 days into 2013 and I'm already behind Lol.

Been working on the web site a bit. Got tired of the "coming soon" Stuff
So I lit a fire under my build team to "Get Going". The Pre Order system Is Working Well.

The New Board Model XT Pro 2.0 Will Be going into select small
Surf Shops along The Coasts in CA, FL and the Gulf, As A Pilot Project
Which might work well for you as swell. It's simply Commision Based, So The Shop
Doesn't Have To Spend Money On Inventory, Just Some Floor Space.

To Answer Your Questions:
The Board can come no elecs for $750 With Figure, but will include the motor mount/ 5 mm coupling, drive shaft and servo harness.
We Designed the new board to have much flexability for a variety of component sizes.
The Elecs Compartment Is Huge. You can see the depth looking at the fit of the 120 amp Esc on it's side.

The board in the pic had color added to the resin at all glass stages. Looking at options on that.
No weight measure was taken, Lipo ran well and didn't need added weight as Motor is dropped deep into the Keel.

I like the idea you have on the silicone tubing, If your vinyl Seal Doesn't work
let me know, I'll send some seal for you. I spent a lot of time to get the seals right for the various production boards.
For Grease up "THE" Shaft Use as much as you can fill, Might not want to term it 'your' shaft Lol ...

At the SC Pier today, there was a surf contest and tons of people.
I had dozens of people watching and wondering where to get one.
I just told them..... "They have them on sale at Walmart" just kidding.
If I had 10 of them in my car I could have sold them all for $1,500 + each.
At one point, I was standing near the waters edge riding waves and I turned
around..... there was a crowd of 12 or more people standing just behind me.
They all went nuts........

There were several photographers with big lens camaras all over the place.

I'm not sure who Mike is that you are refering to?

Hey Indatube.

I cant think of the advantages a CF Stuffing tube would have - you certainly don't need to knock off the weight.

The CF does not handle 'vibration' well and could fail (crack) easily, especially at the ends.
It would ware far quicker within the ID due to the contact of the flex shaft.
CF 'will not' disapate the heat build up within the STUFFING tube, as the Brass does.
Even when running our racing boats - its better to run 'without' the Teflon tubing in the brass stuffing tube - Teflon DOES NOT allow the heat build caused by the friction within the flex shaft to pass through to the brass stuffing tube - SO - you end up with a huge heat build up which can cause added drag and does damage the cable, leading to eventual cable failure.

Thanks for the information on CF..... makes a lot of sense.

My setup for the stuffing tube is brass tubing sized for a .150 flex cable using a teflon tube.
If I remove the feflon tube, will the sizing still be ok, or will the brass tubing ID now be to large?

Hi Indatube !.........pleasure mate.....

I'm not sure if changing the Teflon for Brass will make all that much difference in a ******** - for most of it we are off the throttle, so the heat build up should not be all bad.
The overall seal is more important. If you wanted to remove the Teflon - you could simply slip the next size down of brass tubing into the ID of the stuffing tube.
The wind direction of the flex shaft unfortunately carries water up the stuffing tube - like the shavings from a drill bit, so the tighter the ID tolerance , the better.

When running a flex shaft their is a set up issue that you HAVE TO keep in mind.

Due to the flex shaft being made up of winding's, whenever the flex shaft is under torque ( acceleration) the shaft actually shortens in length as the flex shaft winds up. Like a spring shortening if you rotate it into its wind.

SO - if you are running a thrust washer against the face of the drive shaft housing - ALWAYS - ensure that you set your dog drive up with at least 2-3 mm of play between the thrust washer and the drive shaft housing face on the bench. - OTHERWISE - when the flex shaft is under torque, it will be pulling the thrust washer up hard against the drive shaft housing face on the one side and be tugging on the motor coupling on the other side, causing major drag and load.

This small over site has been the culprit of many broken cables and major power loss in various boat drive set ups.

If you get this right - you will have even more run time !!!

You described my exact problem..........

I have been messing around with sealing the flex cable drive to contain the grease and prevent water from coming in.

O-rings, making rubber backed washers etc. All included pushing the prop shaft tight against the stuffing tube end.
Resulting in one broken flex cable and destroying my stuffing tube. (Special thanks to Maui John for making the major repair).

I will insure the 2-3 mm gap from now on..... Thanks

Also, anyone found a way to seal the prop end of the stuffing tube? I have a great seal on the inside near the coupler but would like a seal on the back.
