Default first buld

hey every one my name is shawn and im 16

this summer i plan on bulding a rc boat powered by a weedeater engin, balsa wood and epoxy with some help from my dad we dont really have any experisnce other than this cheep electric one i had when i was 12 but i broke it when i threw it off the dock at m cottage, so i want to keep it really simple but i still want this thing to go

any ways i just have a couple basic questions

1 what type of things will i need to put this to gether servos ex:
2 i dont really understand how the prop shaft goes through the boat without water geting through
3 how much will this cost jsu so i have a good idea
4 how big should this thing be

im looking to have it be something like this http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/attac...hmentid=851739

You might want to look at a "Wild Thing". That way you can scale it up or down as you see fit. Stay away from balsa. It's like a sponge in that it soaks up water if the finish is ever damaged. Stick with aircraft grade plywood(not lite ply either) as it's considerably more water resistant and stronger. The other advantage of using aircraft ply is that it's flexible up to 1/16th inch thick.

First, you don't want to use balsa for a gas powered boat.
If you want to build one cheaply, check out www.zippkits.com as he has some fast building inexpensive boat kits for weedy engines.

Check out Balsa USA, Lone Star, Tower Hobbies, Sig and I'm sure there are others I forgot.

Shawn - Neither one of those radios will work. The radio for a gas boat needs to be FM or you will get interference. AM is too susceptable to "noise" generated by the ignition and spark plug.

I just bought wood from Lone Star Balsa for 2 45 in. woody boats and the total was $100. Not bad at all for Aircraft grade ply.

Go around to your local lawn mower shops and see if they have any old weedeaters with a 25cc or 30cc Homelite motor. generally, if they have them, the boom is shot or some other stupid thing that made it too expensive to fix. You just want the motor, you should be able to find one for $10 or less. Remember to ask for a Homelite motor, those can be marinized easily and modded in the future when you learn more.

aircraft grade ply. you use the flex cable that comes with the weedwacker. you run it through k&s brass tubing to a ferule. then that connects to a 1/4in shaft. you can make struts but i prefer buying them because they are adjustable. rudders are fairly easy to make. you will need brass, solder, and a soldering iron, and flux. try and make it adjustable too, easyier to setup that way. you can run a 70mm prop to start out with and prop up or down from there. you will also want a failsafe if your radio doesnt come with one built in. someone correct me if i am wrong for i have not built one just done research on the subject. ive built many electric boats tho
