The flex cable runs inside the teflon tubing much like a shaft runs inside a metal stuffing box or tube. The teflon tubing is flexible allowing for bends in the flex cable and is supposedly resistant to wear and self lubricating.[8D]

Spetz,

the teflon tube goes inside your brass stuffing tube.

now, if you were not using a one before than don't worry about it.

the majority don't use them anymore (except in outboards).

ah ok...
That makes sense
But now, if I buy a .150" flex cable which has the tubing...
Does this mean the outside of the tubing is .150" or is it the actual flex cable, meaning that with the teflon tubing it wont fit inside my .150" ID brass tubing??

if you buy a .150" flex cable (with tubing or not) the flex cable is .150".

So I would end up having to take the teflon tubing off anyway to make it fit?

Like I said, I wouldn't worry about the Teflon tube.

90% of us (if not more) don't use one.

Sorry to disagree with you but they aren't self-lubricating, they are made for less resistance. If you've heard the nasty sound that they make when they need greasing, you'll know it.

I ran one of my boats all day and didn't pay attention to the shaft grease. Just kept filling up the "drip" oiler. Never again....spent an hour scraping the melted/twisted teflon tubing off that shaft. ALWAYS grease that shaft with your teflon tube. Trust me, would have been easier to make another shaft.
