Where can I get plans for a viking ship?
Where can I get plans or specs and pics that I can use to scratch build a viking ship? I'm not rich so free would be right down my alley.

And If you need any help with understanding the weird language on the first link, just let me know.

Better have a look for yourself, the Roskilde Fjord is a very nice piece of Denmark and the museum is awsome.
While you're at it, travel on to Oslo and see the Oseberg and Gokstad ship in all their glory.
Yes, I've visited it...
Regards, Jan.

This is great! I'm going to be in your back pocket asking questions when I start this Baby. I have a plan on how to make the oars move in a more natural manner for human movement than the ones I have seen. What I am going to need is a plan that has a deck covering the rowers so you can't see my linkage when using the ship. Thank you and when I finish it you guys will be the first to get pics, but I wouldn't be expecting them this year, stuff like this takes time.

Well here is a 'sneak preview' of the Vikingskibsmuseet in Roskild.
[link=http://www.vikingeskibsmuseet.dk/page.asp?objectid=171&zcs=402]Roskilde vikingship museum[/link]
If you are into this kind of stuff well worth the visit. Dont know if it justifies flying from the other side of the world, to see, but If you are in the area, well worth the visit.
You could probably use a day there in the ship building area. (You can even order your own boat but that probably aint cheap)
Should any one make the trip, Remember to swing by Sweden and see VASA.
A deck covering the rowers? Thats a new idea! Dont think they ever did that.

RE: Where can I get plans for a viking ship?
I think Bensidus means a deck, covering the rowing mechanism, otherwise he'd be building something like a birime, a Greek/Roman vessel.
It'll need to be a rather large model, in order to be able to 'hide' the mechanics under the deck, as the space below is rather restricted.
I like the challenge of building a model that's being rowed, but, if I was to build one, I'd go mainly for the sailing version...

RE: Where can I get plans for a viking ship?
It will have to be big. I gather there are no Viking ships with sails that the rowers were not visible. I'm going to need about 4 inches under the deck for my mechanism to work I can always dress up the linkage coming above deck.I plan to make my boat anywhere up to or under a metre. Is there any info on how the sails were operated and were the oars linked to move in unison or was that left up to the individual oarsmen. This is going to be a challenge you know one of those projects you look for and finally find
