Default elecrtic motor testing

I have a couple of 540's I need to test, Can I just hook them up to a 7.2 battery pack without harming them, or do I need to go through a speed controller? Thanks! Leisure Lake

You can just hook them up to the battery pack if you want to test them.
It won't tell you much, other than that they turn under power.
To find out what kind of RPM and torque they have will require a bit more elaborate set up.

If you have a mod motor, put an amp meter in line. You can dial it in for the best power band and least electrical using by watching the meter. Usually a 5 amp meter will work fine. I took one out of a fried battery charger or if you know of someone with a power panel that has gone bad.

Default Elaborate testing

Grab the shaft with your fingers

Or, when testing, hold it when the airplane prop's mounted...ouch.

Or, when testing a CO2 motor, walk it up to your wife while running in your fingers. I'll bet she'll be just as impressed as mine was..... "Are you having fun?"

Default Impressed wife

Hey Rob,
Our wives must be related.

"And just what little toy are you amusing yourself with now? Never mind. Just go back out to your shop and play."

Well I got my moters tested, and my wife has sparked an interest in my hobby-all at the same time!

Jay Turner once posted to use a astro whatt meter, an airplane prop and a airplane rpm tachometer to make a makeshift dyno. The problem for me is finding the right prop to get the current draw I'm looking for. It could be expensive trying out different props.
