Up Current Boating
 

I was Wondering who has done an RC Vid of a Boat Being Used in a River and going up stream as opposed to down?

I was Just watching some Jet Boating Vids and thought there has to be a way to do RC Boat Racing that isn't done round water Markers but more of a Natural Course like a Creek or river?

So an RC Boat Rally if you can understand what I mean, RC Boats that Display more Torque then Speed?

Some Really wild RC Boating as opposed to Standardised Racing.. I suppose Boat Bashing would be a more appropriate Term??

What you need is a course set up like the 1972 Munich, 1992 Barcelona, 2000 Sydney or the 2004 Athens Kayak/canoe slalom course.

that's pretty crazy,would have tobe about half the scale as those, though I'm betting that would cost a LOT of money to build, but perfect for the idea.

Nah I think the Penrith one has been Drained :(
But it would be Awesome to go to an Amusement Park where they have those Rapid Tube Rides and Stick a Boat in there.. Would be neat to see a Few Boats Rapid Jumping ..

Well, I'm starting to build another one this weekend. I cant wait for the spring. One thing I always forget to mention about the videos. I never ran the boat on those rapids since I put in the 700sc motor. So all those videos(on rapids) were with the boat using a 540 car motor and 6cells.

The 12cell version and 16cell stayed on the lake. However this will change. :) I stopped running the rapids after chipping my impeller several times. Heck, in one of those videos unbenounced to me, a pebble was in the drive for about 3minutes, not good.

Out sheer need for rapids, I'm just going to do some tests and find a way to absolutely guarantee I wont suck up a rock, like a window screen if necessary. Might solder together a brass intake screen....something. Regardless there will be more videos, with more jetboats.

If your interested in doing this as well, it costs about the same as setting up a normal FE, just a different drive and if you get a KMB drive you dont even need a motor mount.

What I enjoyed about up current running was not so much flying over rapids.
It was running the boat down to a speed that the boat would run stationary on the current.
Then surfing on the rapids, or flipping the bow down stream and making
quick loops back up current to a holding position.

If I had property, not only would I build a pond, I would built it two levels.
That way I could build a set of ship locks, and a down river run.[8D]

Would a Mesh Screen help? Like Fly screen or something??

yeah I'm not sure; if I make a scale intake grate, like a real boat, I'm afraid a rock could be physically pushed through by flexing the metal. Then my other worry, if I use a mesh screen, it'll make the motor work too hard and there's more chance for cavitation. I think to a degree I can accept some pebble of very small size, figuring out what size that is is the tough part.

The pebbles that have chewed the impeller were about 1/4" in diameter. Perhaps I just need something that wont allow anything over an 1/8". The situation I have is here in the NE US, all the rivers are lined with glacial stone, so the rocks are round and in every size imaginable. When the pebble gets in there you dont even hear it, it just rolls around like a BB, unfortunately like a sandpaper BB. Tonite I need something to do, so I'm going on a hunch and I'm going to take a piece of brass plate and attempt to cut slits in it. I'll get back to ya on this.

Umi- yeah I do like doing the stationary thing. On the far side of that stream the water is about 6" deep and has many standing waves. It's really fun but nerve wracking as well, since one wrong move and the boat either flips, goes under, or slams a rock. It's definitely a skill. I will get plenty of practice this year, you cant just go out and be an expert on the first day. With real boats I'm used to currents, but primarily only deep water, which is why this "sport" is so interesting to me. I really want a actual jet boat now.

I can Understand why!
I mean Sure Speed is one thing but to navigate a Boat in Dangerous Waters is a Different Skill all together..

Speed is one thing but white water RC Boating is another..


Is it possible to get a Shot of the Under side of your Boat ??

Okay, first shot is what it looks like right now, not pretty, but I've been doing some work trying to smooth things out. Second is what I did to the hull to get that aluminum skid plate in and third is a shot of right ofter I put the plate on. I had those intake grate bars there, but they didnt work out. And the forth pic, well I just like that one. :D

Ah ha! yes it can be done, brass is the ticket. I had tried it with aluminum, but it was far too soft, this was easy to cut and still feels strong. Mind you 1/16" sits too, so 1/8" slits will be cake. Now all I need is a piece of brass, I only had a small piece of stock laying around. not a problem though. Thank you for causing me to rethink this.

How hard was it to mount the Actual Jet drive ??
Is it servo operated to steer?

not hard, it's just one of those measure 10 times cut once deals. there are threads on the FE forum where I detailed the install, as well as the link in my signature. It is just servo steered, the servo turns a nozzle to direct thrust. Check out the thread though, it's pretty long but I went through everything, from the original install to the 4 versions that followed.

question, what size motor would you say i should use for a jet drive on a 30" boat?

well, for all base FE jet drives, they require a 700 series. I like the 700sc in this boat, but my new boat is getting a feigao 12L. A 540 is too small and an 800 is unnecessary. You want the right RPM with the least amount of weight. bad memory here, think 20,000. The 700sc doesit, but the feigo will do it lighter, due to decrease in cell count. 12-16(700sc) 6-12(feigoa).

will the BL setup for the SV work?

althoguh i probably will just use the 700bb turbo or the 700SC

mmmm.. Yeah they seeem to recommend a 700 Series motor on the Jet Drives.. But We Saw Yours in action on 6 cells and a 540 and it wasnt too bad..

i think a 700bb turbo on 12 cells should be right....right?

it dont know if the hull will take more than 12 cells, but ill buy an extra 4..just in case:D
