Proper gearing/tuning is pretty well the only way to do it.

If you are having temps issues with an electric motor your gearing is most likely the issue. There could also be something binding in the drive train but gearing is the most common problem. Fans are a band-aid for not doing the job correctly the first time.

Depending on you car body. Cutting holes in the windshield and rear window area can drastically reduce motor and battery temps. I've personally seen a drop of 40F degrees by cutting holes in the body of an E-Revo. Doing the same on a Slash 2WD dropped motor temps about 20F. Once had thermal problems with a VXL3 ESC in a bandit. Cut the windshield out and a small area behind the shock tower and no more issues.

Well as far as nitro.....using the right glow plug and the proper fuel is a biggie. Also air flow over the cooling fins and through the inside of the body shell. Ambiant air temps and humidity play a factoring roll as well. Let's not forget about the tune of the engine....

Ample holes in the body and a slightly rich fuel mixture ensure my engines can't overheat.

gearing for both, slight dab of heat sink paste on motor sinks or esc for electric, light-rich mixture and good ventalation for nitro.

learning how use the accelerator works on both
