Default Ghetto diff gasket material??

Hi guys, I disassembled my Savage diffs to check and oil them, without checking if I had any spare gaskets. Turns out I don't. Is there anything else that works in a pinch as gasket material? I'm due for a bash tomorrow, so any ideas would be awesome. Ta.

I would imagine in a pinch you could just make your own?

Head to your local auto parts store and get the thinnest gasket material they have, it's usually sold in sheets.

Dunno if I'll have time to get to the store. I might try to get down to the LHS early and see what they've got, but if I don't make it, I was windering if there was anything in the house I could use. I was actually thinking used decal sheet might work just for the day.

As in the back side(paper) of it? That or use poster board. Or thick cardboardy paper.

I tried it. So far so good. If it works I'll probably always do this instead, should be a better seal even than a gasket.

Buy a tube of ATV gasket maker from the auto store. Will last a long time.

I use the same silicone gasket maker we use on 1:1 cars' oil pans. Works great, just gotta give it time to set up!

I dont know off hand the exact arrangement of the ring gear and diff on a Savage, but If its a bevel gear anything like the Losi LST's, the thickness of the gasket can effect the pinion contact with the ring gear. You might have to shim the diff differently.

I make my own gaskets for all sorts of engine parts. That is, if they used paper gaskets in the first place. If there were O-rings, I'll retain O-rings and use Ultra Copper RTV. Paper gaskets always get a thin film of UC RTV on both sides of the paper and assemble parts immediately. The best paper I've found for making into gaskets is 50-70lb white cardstock. About the same thickness as Index cards. When I make "ghetto gaskets", I cheat. Stick the cardstock in the AIO printer, and stick the part I need a gasket for on the scanner bed with white paper covering the rest of the glass. Gives me a perfect image of the near-exact size of the gasket needed.

I need to get a hole puncher that makes teeny holes instead of the standard size hole puncher for the screw holes. I need to make some backplate gaskets for a couple airplane engines I have and cutting screw holes with an X-Acto knife takes forever.

I have in fact used milk carton as the bottom gasket on the cylinder on the moped i once owned! Impressive that it held up for some days.
