i erased my original text here, because it turns out that i had some new, bad batteries. they lit the power indicator light, but did not have enough power, apparently, to bring up the lcd screen. that's all. i was fooled into NOT suspecting the batteries, because the indicator light lighted up as normal. but the radio is fine now with replacement batteries.

also, i don't know how to delete this thread, or i would.
