Default RE: Redcat Mirage unboxing / body off/ running vid

I called redcat, and sent an email with video to let them know the issue.
There most likely will be an alloy upgrade.

I can confirm my suspesion that redcat has more than 1 manufacturer for their models. they actually have 4.

I could tell that the mirage, as well as the pagani and other new models differed greatly from the epx line.

Im going to try and make alloy pin mounts tomorrow.

It was 40 degrees outside when the model's broke. But I think its more that the suspension arms are just much tougher than the pin mounts. They need to be thicker, or made out of alloy.

talked with redcat and they feel it was the cold that caused the pin holders to break.
They said they have jumped their mirage's much higher without issue. Naturally in AZ its warmer.

Alloy upgrades are being looked into tho. I will try to make my own. The Mirage is fun to drive, and if it takes alittle work to make a custom part and have it be stronger then its worth it.

The more I read through this post the more similarities I see to the EXO. It's not an exact copy, but it's pretty damn close. I think the Redcat designers had an EXOin their office while creating the Mirage. So many of the parts look like the EXOparts, they even have a weird "organic" styling to them. Post 5 photos of different parts of the Mirage and I'll match them with my EXO.

Anyhow, maybe the Axial aluminum arm mounts would fit the Mirage and could help stregthen the suspension.

here are a bunch of parts pics from redcat's site.
if it is closely copied from the exo, thats probly a good thing.
I fabbed up some ugly plastic pin holders last night. Not pretty, but they will let me run the truck tomorrow at the track. Redcat has replacements on the way for me.
Ill still try and make some alloy mounts, but need to find the right material.

I contacted T-Bone Racing and have been told they have a Mirage coming and will be making bumper/skid plate for it.

Ive had bumpers they make for my tornado/volcano and twister. Their stuff is as tough as RPM products. Cant wait to add what they come up with to my Mirage.

The motor mounts are different designs; the rest of the parts share visual similarities.

Look into Axial part #'s AX30863 and AX30864. Those are the aluminum lower arm mounts.

I dont think any of the parts are direct clones, but the concept of the parts is copied for sure.
I might try picking up the alloy mounts. They do look pretty close.

well we can say that about almost everything in RC then all buggies look the same for the most part, hell some parts will fit with very minor mods to the next brand. Even most SCT's look like copies of each other.
Now if the parts fit perfectly then they are clones like the king baja is a 1:1 clone of the HPI baja 5b, or those TL-01 clones in australia, or the DF-02 clones we had in the US

I hear ya,
under that definition, the mirage is not a clone.

It did fool the hobby shop employee tho! He thought it was an axial. I loved the look on his face when I said...No, Redcat...LOL.

If anyone has had bad experience with a redcat model in the past, its worth mentioning that they have 4-5 different companies making models for them.
Thus, the quality and build type differs a fair bit between some of the model lines.
The Mirage is a good example, as it shares nothing with any of the other models and has many parts constructed differently than the other models.
Also explaines why the caldera 10e has an ezrun 35a system...while the lighter EPX Pro models have a ezrun 60a system with 540 motor. Im sure it had to do with the options the maker gave Redcat. Otherwise, they would have put the systems the other way around.

why are the suspension pin holes on the mounts not circle? they look oblong. Does the Exo have some kind of spacers to allow changing of the toe?

Most alloy hingepin holders use plastic cups (slot into those holes) which are oblong in order to have two diffferent hole placements for toe settings and to fully capture the pins (as opposed to using c-clips).

If you enlarge this picture of the Xray equivalent part, you can see the plastic parts and how they work...

ah, so those allow change of the toe...or is it caster?

anyway, the mirage has pins that have a flat head on one side. The head is kept from coming out by a part of the roll cage. No C clips nor do they screw in.
So, if the exo pins are the same diameter, then its possible the exo holders could work.
wish my hobby shop stocked exo parts!

I found a video of the mirage on it's home turf:

Ive taken mine to a small sand pit and it was more fun to drive there than the parking lot. I hope to have more running vid in a week. Just got hit with a foot of snow yesturday[:@]

Ive had a few more packs threw the mirage now.

Durability doesnt seem to be an issue. I had that rear pin holder break awhile back, but it would seem now that it was due to the cold outside temps and not poor plastic.

I had tried to drive it on the indoor SCT track a couple weeks back. Between 3s lipo and the punch control being low it was impossible to drive. But last friday I drove it on 2s lipo with the punch control turned almost all the way up. That made it very nice to drive.
Even on 2s, this buggy is the same speed as my SC10 brushed on 2s.

In this vid, the buggy takes a nasty tumble with no issue. And I have done this kinda crash on pavement 4-5 times.

I have said before that the top speed stock is around 35mph. I was using caution, as I was judging by eye.

today my buddy used his phone with an app. We got 44mph!!! Oh yah, thats a good speed. Thats on the stock 3s lipo pack. The buggy can handle 4s!

my buddy ran his mirage on a 4s, 5000mah lipo today.
His GPS read 59mph.
He said he also crashed really bad, with the buggy tumbling on pavement for 25' or more, with nothing breaking.
Both of us are starting to really like these buggies.
Now I have to go and buy a 4s lipo!

We run a 3 and 4s here on the store demo total difference in speed! Most customers are swapping out the 3s for a 4s after they are seeing the difference. So far it has gone through some major bashing with no issues. Nitro great vids!

Man, this buggy certainly looks promising nothing! Anything you recommend tweaking out of the box? How are those custom parts coming?

I still can not believe how much buggy you get for the money! and your eval seems promising, nitro! I cant decide whether I want to build a buggy from a LCG Slash 2wd or just get this!

1. Buy the Mirage. 2. Take it apart.3. Reassemble it.

Call it a rebuild thread.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

1st attempt at custom suspension pin holders were out of a plastic slash chassis....didnt hold up.
I do believe that the cold temps effected the plastic. simillar jumps have been done now without issue.

I cant say if the mirage is as good as the exo. I havent owned an exo. I have owned the ax10 and scx10. based on how awsome those trucks are, Im sure that the exo is well built. Other than the mirage having a better battery tray setup, I dont think the mirage has a leg up on the exo.

But I will say this, the Mirage is a good step above other Redcat models. Tougher parts, better design. Not so generic as the other brushless trucks.

The mirage is also faster than the RTR exo. According to jang's review (correct me if I am wrong) it does 35mph on a 3s. The mirage does 45mph on the stock (OK, but not awsome) 3s lipo. On 4s it nearly hits 60mph. It screams!

Pretty much everyone who has seen my mirage has said "thats and exo right?"
So, basically I own a "exo" that costs $100 less than the RTR exo and is faster!
I am hopefull that some upgrades will come out. Im still waiting for Tboneracing to offer a bumper/skid plate!
