On trying to start my shockwave 1/10 i broke my main gear shaft would like to know why and help on what to do now.

Which shaft are we talking about? The shaft inside the nitro engine?

Yes it is the one that goes threw the motor and has the gear on th end will post some pix.

If it was new, I would contact Redcat and see about a replacement.

Is there/was there a break-in period for the motor mentioned in the manual?

It has not started yet and I have emailed Redcat no replay yet.
