Default Recoil Disaster (pics)

Hello, I was taking the pull start off my engine for the first time and following instructions, I put a screwdriver in when I took it out, but it didn't work. The recoil springy thing started unravelling but luckily I was able to hold onto it and re-coil the part that uncoiled. I got a zip tie with one hand and I was able to keep it in its current form. Any tips on how to put it back in, because I really don't want to screw it up.

Pics of how it's held together

I would just let it go and wind it back in by hand... it's going to have to be wound tighter than that to fit in, and it's not really difficult to do.

There should be something like a hook on the outer end of the spring.. it'll fit into the spool. From there just wind the spring, just go slow and be patient.

dont put it too tight b/c it starts to get less tight(the spring) and you pullstart handle and cord will be limp and not stay taught.

P.S. When I rebuilt my friends pull start it made my thumb muscel sore from holding it so tight.

Don't try to wind it up then put it into the spool, that's next to impossible. Just hook the end into the spool with it completely unwound, and feed it into the spool... no problems with overtightening or anything.

time and patience. but dont worry if you dont have these. you can just get a sullivan tiger drive.just get rid of the pull start.

I had to change my recoil yesterday on my mt2... I was standing over the truck in the snow and pulled too far and snapped the spring... The point here is that it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to change the pull start if you know what you are doing... The main thing is not to unwind the spring.... If the spring is broken already, the best thing I found to do is wind the spring by hand and connect the end to the spool first, then wind the string up until tght... place the spool into the starter housing and carefully connect the inner hook of the spring without letting the spring unwind.. once set, place the one-way bearing in correctly then finish assembly... I know its hard to explain, but it works....I did this in the snow yesterday.....
