This may sound stupid, but what is a starter box, do you mount them onto your car, increasing the weight, do you put them directly onto the one way bearing how big are they wots the best value for money, i was recommended one to start a 1/8 buggy instead of a rotostart type thing, i realy need help cause im in a bit of a mess here

A starter box is the most popular to start a nitro RC car. They make ones that fit basically every signle class. they dont mount to the car you put your car on top of it, and look at the bottom of your chassi, see that hole right under the flywheel (disc shaped thing on the engine shaft) a starter box has a rubber wheels that is connected to a motor, you pres you r car onto the starter box so the rubber wheel of the starter box, and the flywheel of your car are touching, and the elctric motor in the starter box pins, which inturn spins the flywheel, which then starts the engine. You dont to put any equipment on your car for it to work with a starter box, but most people would reccomend you remove your pull-start, or rotostart and put a engine backplate in its place, becuase the one-way bearing in a pull starter, or roto-start robs your engine of a little bit of power.

Honestly there are many different companies that make starter boxes that will work with 1/8th buggies. What i, and many others to consider to be the best starter box is the OFNA chrome top. [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCUC2&P=7]This one[/link]

The only thing is that box only works off of a 12V gel-cell battery which costs around $15 and then you need a charger that can charge it, minmum basic charger $10. So that adds up a little bit. there are plenty of other very good starter boxes that wrok off of duel 7.2v sitck packs(a standard Rc battery pack). If you stick with good comapnies like OFNA, or duratrax, ect. then youll be very very happy you ditched your old pullstarter, and got a starter box

The reason i highly reccomend you get the chrome top is becuase of its crazy amount of torque, and reliability. When you get your first race engine youll know why. New engines are very hard to start, and the chrome top really shines becuase it has the strength to starrt those very thight, brand new engines with ease.

If you dont wanna spend the little bit of extra money on the gel-cell battery and charger you need for the chrome top, then [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHUC7&P=7]this[/link] is antoher quality box, it doesnt have the crazy torque of the chrome top, but its more then enough to relibly start your engine for years. It runs off of 2 standard 6cell RC battery packs.

do any starter boxes have built in glow ignitors? or do you just use a portable one...

Well there are some starter boxes that have "power panels" that allow you to plug in a glow plug igniter and let it run off your starter box battery. this starter boxes are more expensive though

I have a power panel on my starter box and while there good I do not recommend getting one ofr the simple fact of it having a glow plug igniter. The glow plug igniter on my starte box does not carry enough power to heat the glow plug enough for it to start even if that battery is fully charged. I use a portabl;e glow igniter with mine as it's just easier to keep track of. But box starters are the way to go (at least I think) and are a lot easier then a roto start, pull start or any other way of starting the engine.

Wow this has been really, helpful, soon (very) i will be laying my hands on £60 (around $100) so.... first i have to get my xtr fixed, then i will see what money i have left and whatever it is ill see what i can do, maybe ebay is the way, only problem is that they could be faulty
