i think you should start from scratch cause dragsters are really skinny. a touring cars chassis is mostlikey a pan, i would make a tube chassis.

a nitro touring car shouldnt be that hard to convert to a "dragster". if all you want is a functional pro-stock nitro car all you'd have to do is probably mount some larger diameter foam tires- this might also include finding a way to shorten the rear axle (ie shorter arms and cvds or dogbones). i'd also install all of the electronics as far back as you can for more rear traction. also look into some O-ring type front wheels for that prostock look. you could even go as far as create a custom stretched and narrowed chassis for further functional and visual gains.

well it depends on what you want. a pro-stock is a street car with big motor and roll cage, a dragster is a custom frame with motor in the rear. www.neweramodels.com has some dragsters and funny cars you might look there and the might be cheaper then you thought.

RE: dragster building
thanks for your replys, you were right in thinking i was looking to build a pro-stock/funny car, being an engineer making the parts is not going to be a problem, what dsoe anyone think would be the best drive train set ups eg. 2wd, 4wd, shaft, belt, gear ratio etc. i'm not worryed about compotion i just want the chalage of building a custom rc car and having a bit of fun at my local club

If you want to build something that handles and looks like a real drag car , it would have to be rear wheel drive only . If using a glow engine , a belt drive is isually used , and for electric motor cars a gear drive is best . Have a look at http://www.grandmotorsports.com/
It has large pictures of both types of kits . The key to a quick Drag car is keeping weight to a minimum . Here is mine , an electric with 3 cell LiPo and Mamba motor

RE: dragster building
Hi,
I have seen them from magazines and notice that they only use the rear part for a 2WD drive config with 2 speed and instead of shocks, they use tie rods. that's all I know.
Regards
Joaquim

Use the back half of your touring car and mount it on an aluminium front half . Remove the suspension with a fixed setup . Get some 30 mm rear foams that fit a standard 1:10 hub . Parma bodies will work well if using the same wheelbase . My chev body is for a longer wheelbase and a skinnier width , so proper drag bodies will not fit a standard width or length tourer .
Here is my front half to give you an idea of the simple front end .

Yeah a 132 ft strip . I have not raced this car yet as I only just got it finished 2 weeks ago and there has not been an event run since then. I ordered a Mamba Max 7700 combo that will not arrive for a while yet , so while i am waiting i made up an adaptor plate and fitted the 1:18 scale Mamba Comp X motor / ESC with a 3 cell Lipo . This combination is less powerful and has less torque , but is real light and should rev to almost 90 000 rpm . I think this car should do about 2.5 seconds without much problem . I already have raced my LRP brushless 6 Nimh cell Tamiya TA05 touring car to a best of 2.87 @ 67 km/h .
If you decide to build your hybrid tourer/drag car , it could run in the mid 2 second bracket as i have seen a modded HPI do that with a OS 18 TZ motor .

At our track a HPI RS3 modded to 2 wheel drive and an OS 18 TZ motor has done a 2.39 second pass . Those OS motors are the best small blocks around for the money ($127 US), and even though the factory specs say about 1.8 HP they have been dynoed at above 2 . If you use a regular motor i think you will be lucky getting below 3 seconds . Remember removing weight is like adding horsepower .
If you have an average .15 motor in a tourer that does 3.3 or so seconds , then you pull out the same motor and put it in something like a Walbern chassis , that motor will instantly go more then half a secong quicker .
