"Deans plugs" - How important are they?
Seen a few post mentioning these Deans plugs, can someone give me more info. How do you attach them etc...
Thanks!
PS-This is not for racing purposes, just bashing. Its for a new Stampede and batteries will be the Radio Shack GP 3300's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwIZw_RTyVI Deans are a cheap and worthwhile upgrade. If you want to upgrade motors you will have to upgrade plugs, with this battery Id upgrade just to be sure that nothing melts.

I wouldnt use anything else....it is cheap insurance. Tamiya stye plugs are very cheesy and never make a good connection, Atleast ive always had terrible luck with them shorting out and what not.
When you plug a deans style plug in u actually have to use some force to make the connection.....and that tells me its a good connection.

Do local shops do this, or can you buy any batteries that already come with them? I don't even have a solderer or wire strippers and frankly in that video I can't see much of what he's doing. Seems kind of a pain in the ass, lol

I use Anderson PowerPoles for everything electric, they are cheaper than the deans I think at about $12 for 12 pair and you can also use a crimp tool on them instead of soldering. I solder them myself but Anderson says that a good crimp is actually better (lower resistance) than a solder, the main reason I haven't gone to crimping is that the crimp tools can be somewhat expensive, about $50, but they should last you a lifetime. And yes the above poster is correct the Tamiya style connectors are JUNK.

Tamiya Plugs or "White Plugs" will melt very easily.
The Deans plugs do not heat up like White Plugs and offer good current transfer so you can get optimal power to ur motor and battery.

Simple because it's the absolute cheapest thing that they can get away with. And yes I have seen them melt. so the above poster isn't exaggerating. At one time (like 25 yrs ago) Tamiya type connectors were the industry standard and just haven't gone away for reasons that have everything to do with profit, it has become one of those things that they pretty much expect people to replace. You can continue to use them but eventually they will fail.

Some will do it but it's REALLY easy to do it yourself, Either buy deans or powerpoles and buy a $15 soldering iron, something you will need in this hobby anyway.

You can buy the plugs and they will most likely do the soldering for you. My LHS would do it for me for no fee. It's not that big of a deal and takes about 5 mins. Although I can see where they might not. If they somehow mess up and break a speed control they wont want to have to pay for it.
You will have to check

seriously, it is easy to do, but you will want to have someone experianced in rc soldering help you the first time. you short out your batt accidently and your day will be bad. if you fry your esc your day will be bad too.

Tamiya style plugs melt becuase of there EXTREMELY high resistance (maybe it isnt extreme, but it sure is enough to melt thermoplastic, and yeah it might be cheap but it melts at least around 8 AT LEAST) the problem is with higher resistance the hotter the wire gets and the hotter the wire gets the more resistant it is, if you want extra detail pm me and i will tell you. lol, (i will actually tell you if you pm me)
Thanks
