I never tried to explain this before, it's tough! OK, it's like a shoebox sized object, and you put your car on top in a specific position so that a rubber wheel in the starter box makes contact with the car engine flywheel. When you press down on the car on top of the box, a pressure switch activates and the rubber wheel spins and turns the motor. It's the easiest way to start a car.

It has other benefits too. When you use a starter box, you do not need a rotostart backplate, or a pull start, so you can seal your engine properly, giving smoother running and easier tuning, not to mention, one less point of failure. Worth having one but a bit of a high initial investment. If you get a good one you should never need to buy another.

Starter boxes come in handy at times. Racers mostly use them for a direct method in starting their vehicle. It directly turns the flywheel with the rubber wheel you see in the photo above in this thread. It also causes you to be able to attach a dead backplate on your engine which reduces drag you may experience with a pull start or roto start. That drag reduction gets you a little more performance out of your engine. The only downside to starter boxes, IMO, is if you're a basher, you have to carry it around in addition to everything else. But for the convinience and quick startup, I'd deal with carrying it around any day.

Just to add additional information. That picture above is of a box that is not set up yet. It will have alignment pins on it (which you set up) to align your car's chassis so that your flywheel will always line up over the rubber wheel properly.

Extra moneY $$$$$ Most engines now have a recoil starter. The box replace the recoil starter. It is mainly use for racing.
