Default Taping tires...

I've seen people talking about putting hockey tape or something similar to it on their tires after the tread is gone. Will this actually work for on roading? I know it won't for off roading, no grip :S

Thanks!

You have to be a true cheapskate to do that.

Heh, Ive done it when breaking-in new engines when I didnt have spare tires and didnt want to mess up the stock offroad tires. It isnt good for much else other than sliding around and doing donuts. But if you really want to drive and done have spare tires, electric tape will work decently well, heh. Duct tape will work ok for a little bit also.

may i reroute this thread a bit?

what have you guys experienced with taping tires to get rid of ballooning affect? I want to try doing that for some high speed runs later on and wanted to hear from who's already done it. What is your opinion on it? Does it work effectively?

Uhh, if you mean taping them to keep them from turning into "pizza cutters" then it will work as far as balloning goes you need to use either a stiffer tire and/or foam

yes you can tape the inside of the tires to combat balloning....I have done it using a heavy duty strapping tape. It works very well.

Taping tires work up to a certain speed depending on the type of tire.

what happens if rpm goes out of that certain limit?

The balooning start again, and if you have enough power, they turn ninto pizza cutters. You could try to put the stiffest foam in the tires to have even more reduction and more sidewall stiffness.

No need for useless comments like that, I can pay the price, but my lhs is about half an hour away and their prices for tires are horrid, so I have my reasons. I thought I could use the tape as a short substitute.

So we've come this conclusion?

-You can tape the tires for drifting and to reduce ballooning.
-It's best to buy new tires, but it is possible to use hockey tape for a makeshift form of a tire.

Please correct me if I'm incorrect.

Thanks again!
