I damamaged an 08041 shock. (HSP) and bought a replacement. When I looked at it, I could use finger pressure to undo a knurled section from a hex section.
I was a bit surprised and looked the car. It was the same.
I have heard mention of changing the viscosity of the oil in shocks to change their behaviour, and assume this was what that was for. But then I see that the whole shank of 08041 is threaded and that this is probably a preload setting..
So.
Can I change the oil in these shocks?
What happens if I just keep winding?
Why do HSP send me (half the number I need of ) preload shims, if I have this capability? Sorry sarky remark.

You can change the oil, no problem, just drain the old and put in new. You dont want the spring too tight that it bounces, you want it set so that it will absorb the bumps and keep it up, not sagging.

To change the oil you will need to take the shock off of the car.
-remove spring
-remove the top cap of the strut (hex shaped)
-dump out the oil
-refill with different oil, work strut rod up and down (not all the way to the top though) to remove air
-add more oil if necessary
-reassemble
-repeat for other strut

OK. Thanks for that. But there is nothing else to grip when I try to remove the hex. I assumed it was the knurled ring, but that is loose and has nothing to do with it.

Talking of removing the shocks, how do I get the top end of the shock off/on the ball joint it is on? The bottom seems to be a tiny allen key, but the top...is a press-fit?
Thanks again for all the advice.

OK. Found it.
Can you do a reset on that vehicle's ESC? I have had trouble with mine from the get-go. Reverse seems unreliable. I know about the braking and the need for a pause. But I keep having to use the trim to get the truck to work properly, then it suddenly wants to have the trim re-set again, or it starts going without my telling it.
Not having much luck with this truck!

sounds like an esc problem.. Depending on the esc you have, there should be a reset button. It may just need to be reset.
If there is a button, Press it for 5 seconds, give it throttle for 2 seconds, brake for 2 seconds, leave it in neurtral for 2 seconds and let off the reset button. See if this helps. If not then the esc is on its way out and wandering.

I have tried a search on just about every combination of the two words, along with others. I can _buy_ them, but not find any info.[&o]
Any how, thanks for trying to help. It's still under warranty. I may have to try to get it replaced
Nick.

Yeah. That _was_ the one I had found. A $70 esc that can be damaged by reverse battery polarity!
Still I will try the revers throttle idea, and see what happens.
One question: Do you know what extra set of contacts is for? Top left hand on my picture.

Reversing the polarity on the motor leads and the throttle control seems to have helped.
I still like the idea of a programmable ESC though. Looking at a couple of possibilities.
