Strange fuel system issues

My CEN MT2 sat all winter due to a blown clutch bell. In this time, fuel residue in the bottom of the tank formed, which is natural.
What bothers me is that every time I go out to start it, the engine sucks this stuff and does nothing but tease me. If I put my priming line on the tank, remove the line from the carb, aim that clear of the truck, then purge the system, the engine will fire up in less than 10 pulls and will run just fine. It seems once I get it started, it quits sucking the crud, but every time I start it it sucks this stuff in and doesn't start. :|
Once I get it running, the engine runs perfectly. You couldn't ask for a better idle, smooth acceleration, temps are right at 250F, and it will run all day long without a hitch(Which, I guess, is normal for an OS engine with about 3/4 of a gallon on it, hehe). The hard part is getting it started...
What's the best way to flush this sucker out? I'd love for it to quit doing this so I can get back into the "Fill it up, prime it, 5 yanks or less and it's alive" routine it was in last year. The tank, and it's built-in fuel filter, are 6 years old and have about three gallons or so on them.

spray it clean through the fill hole with some brake parts cleaner, then rinse it with fuel before filling it up.
OR, better yet, check out this thread to fit an OFNA 125cc fuel tank in your unit.
