I think the xl-5 has bearings already good to go. It may be the steel idler gear that you will need. That's a good price for xv-l combo. It does involve removing the trans , but is a pretty easy job especially since the motor and gear will already be off.

sorry, transmission. It's the plastic gerbox that the motor is mounted to and the idler gear is inside. Look at exploded views on Traxxas' website.

If your car is a newer Traxxas, it may have the Magnum transmission already. What model is it?

Just a word of advice, if you keep going to your LHS for things like installing a motor/esc combo they will take advantage of you. So whatever you do, DO NOT let them take it and charge you for doing something you should be doing.

I agree i am brand new into RC and though i may have only started with an 1/18 scale the first thing i did was took it apart and put it back together along with a but load of reading. I still havent even driven the thing yet. Tomorrow is the glorious day. But ya if i were you id say the most important thing is knowing your rc inside and out.

It may be a good thing to have the lhs do the work and ask them if you can watch. Next time you may just decide that "I can do that" and we can help you thru it if you get hung up.
