As for electrics, they have come a long way, you can run them for 15-30 minutes typically for a 1/10th 2 or 4wd buggy/truck depending on the battery capacity, and if they are using brushless motors, and other variables.
Depending on if you have a good charger, you can charge up a battery in about an hour or so.
Nimh are commonly used, while Lithium Polymer or "lipo" batteries are becoming more common place, cheaper, and have the advantage of 2x the power/capacity density. Also popular and safer are A123 Lithium-Manganese and Life-Po cells, which are better than Nimh being similar to Lipo in their power/capacity weight savings, and being able to handle a lot more abuse and much much faster charge rates (as in 15 minute recharge even).

upto you electric has alot higher startup cost than nitro
I have a jammin X1x got it off amain for $330ish shipped (after a coupon code)
had to buy a Z-brace for $14, CNC'd front and rear brace set ($15 more), and a Hitec MG645(i think) servo to make it into a rock solid bashing machine.
The motor it comes with is a F.28 Mine tuned VERY easily (spent like 3 seconds on it) and holds it the whole run.
only thing I don't like is a tank of nitro lasts around 7-9 minutes tops.
I'm actually thinking of picking up another to convert to electric I'm so happy with its build quality

i have a losi strike with a 15t motor. its a brushed motor, but its pretty quick. i bought a 2s 7.4v 5000mah lipo off ebay for $30 shipped(new) i can run my blitz for 30minutes on a single charge.
i also own a rustler vxl(brushless motor) i have a 3s 11.1v 3300mah lipo battery i got off ebay for $25 new. it runs for 15-20 minutes on a charge. but this battery in this truck can do 55-60MPH! i bought 2 of these lipos for $50 shipped so i can run for 30+ minutes at a time.
IMO electrics(espesially brushless) provide more fun for your effort/money. they dont take as much work to maintain. but for some people, maintaining and re-fueling a nitro is part of the fun.
so you have to ask yourself, which kinda guy are you? are you a "plug and play" or "tune and fuel" kinda person?
