How does oil content affect your engine?

I'm just wondering how the different oil percentages affect your engine and performance. If I want more longevity for my engine, should I use a fuel with a higher oil percentage? There are two different fuels my lhs carries: 20% oil and 16% oil. Both are 20%nitro. Should I run 20% oil if I want better engine protection?

more oil = worse perforrmance but better engine protection/cooler running, you are quite right.

oil percentage is usualy set by the engine manufacturor - whilst you might be ok with more, you definately dont want less!

the 16 percent should be good, the 20% might be alittle to much, atleast for my engine.

what do you mean by "too much" joeman? what kind of effect will too much oil have on my engine?

I might be getting a used RC10GT with a Novarossi CX12 in it. what kind of fuel should I get for max protection? I'll give up the extra performance for longevity.

16% is on the performance side, 20 is on the longevity side. I usually get 18% if i'm not racing because it's in between, plus it is a common percentage. but i wouldn't get too worked up about the longevity thing. It won't dramatically effect your engine's life, and you'd want to get a new engine every 2 years or so anyways. If your not racing, go ahead and get 20%, you probably won't see a difference in the performance.

I use white lightning 8% oil 20% nitro... no problems what so ever..

thanks mike. some good info there... you gotta wonder though, the author is a little biased right? I mean, he designed the stuff!

I also use fuel with low oil content when I'm racing, but when I'm not I switch back to 18%. I still need a little more convincing.

lol yeah, i guess it is a little biased... I just got into r/c like a month ago.. and i started out using this stuff, working great so far.. tuned the engine perfect.. no problems, except for minor "user" problems :)

well, I think I'll just go with the 16%. Not that I don't believe you guys...its just the lowest oil content fuel my lhs carries.
