Vintage "Taxxas" Thread? [&:]

Not sure if you can edit the thread title, if not maybe get a mod to do it.

I'd like to see some pics. I hear Traxxas offered kits way back when. I wish they still did. [&o]

wow, thats a rarity,

traxxas does not admit to the wild cat 4x4, there first car, i forget the whole story but basicly it was a poc or it was falsly lisenced under their name so they had them all recalled and destroyed.

that is a beauty though

I like that Wildcat. Reminds me of the Tamiya Hotshot, which is a good thing.

That's crazy though... So they were all recalled and destroyed then?

And lol I'm not sure if there's a mention of kits on their site even. But I know you used to be able to build them. Not sure when they stopped, but I know it was all RTR by the time I found this hobby in '07.

Indeed. Even doing a teardown and rebuild it isn't the same. I didn't clip the parts off the trees and sift through the screw bags. I have a few RTRs, and they never feel "mine" the way my kit built models do.

I'm not knocking RTR fans, just personally I love the building process. Little things, like picking the brand and color of paint, customizing sticker placement, and choosing your own electronics ensure that yours is at least a little bit different from the next guy with the same kit.

Hold on a sec.... The Wildcat is a Traxxas?!?!.... I have one of those in my box of Misc cars. I've had it since I was a kid but never gave it any thought as I thought it was just some random pile of junk.....

Great... Looks like I have another project...

well to answer that last bit, they stopped early in the production of the black chassis rustler if my memory serves me right

Unfortunate. I don't blame them though, kits aren't very popular compared to RTR, and it was probably too expensive to maintain assembled and unassembled versions of the same product.

For a long time Traxxas contracted out their assembly to a company call Protrax. The Rusty and Pede where the first two trucks to be offered RTR as I recall. I'm not sure how long that relationship lasted but is seemed like Traxxas went to all RTR in just a year or two.

Protrax eh? I doubt that's in the USA, too bad because I wouldn't mind a part time job assembling kits all day.

Sledgehammer, circa 1993. Still runs good and will wheelie all the way down the street all day. Wheels are newer, but I still have the originals.

I believe Protrax was in the USA but it's my understanding that they only did the assembly between early 1999 and late 2000 then the assembly was moved over seas to the current facility.

I agree assembling kits part time sounds like fun. I've had my rusty apart so many times i could almost assemble it with my eyes closed..

I like those tires on the Sledgehammer. They look like the ones on my Lunch Box.

Gonna have to find something like that as soon as my Pede needs new rubber.

I think the RC I've had apart the most is my TB-02. Always having to open that spur/pinion box and clean it out. It's like a vacuum with the amount of debris it sucks into that compartment.

well heres my fiero manual cover to cover

http://s483.photobucket.com/albums/r...iero%20manual/

slideshow: http://s483.photobucket.com/albums/r...t=b4cc6939.pbw

stay tuned in the coming days for such classics as the:
Sledgehammer manual
Hawk manual, warrenty card, option parts list, original parts list, parts mail order form, operating instructions, radio option and parts list
Nitro Hawk/buggy/street manual

and if anyone out there has any manuals, sticker sheets or paper work or even boxes for any other vintage traxxas stuff let me know, i would love to have or borow them so i can get them uploaded as well.

and you may be thinking "well traxas has the exploded veiws and parts lists, so why do this?" well for one the fiero is listed as the gtp and has only an outdated parts list from 94' (which is the same for a few others) and the rest only have just that, exploded veiws. and for some of us, that isnt as good enough.

edit: if anyone needs smaller or larger pics of the fiero manual, email me at [email protected]

oh and speaking of it heres some box art and adds to keep ya'll happy

ive got more on the way

Traxxas used to be on the border of Garland and Dallas Tx [Beltline/N.W.Highway] 10min from my house which was [and still is] in Mesquite,I've always thought thier name was homage to Track[x]/Texas=Traxxas.I used to drive by them everyday going to work before they moved to Carrollton Tx,not sure if they're still there or somewhere else today. If I'm right Cameron Kellogg was one of thier Team drivers that worked at Mikes when it was just a small shop on Beltline near old downtown Carrollton, many,,,many moons ago.He showed me how to dial in my first esc [Traxxas XL1!] I ever owned, made it look too easy[8D]. I had the same spur problem when I had my Sledge and if I remember right I replaced it with either a re-enforced fibre unit from RPM or a steel spur from Stormer Racing, solved the issue. It was my 2nd truck after a Blackfoot[s],I also had a Radicator [same chassis as the Sledge] I received in a trade, this was back in my senior yr in highschool[91'[].Remember the old SledgeHammer ads in CarAction with it sittin' on a pile of black and blue [painted] BBQ bisquettes',always made me want to light up a pile of that stuff and jump my truck thru it! when your young your invincible,,,,LOL!

Funny thing,I applied at them for production line work at te original location right after highschool, never called me.
