Original Tamiya ad for the Toyota Celica Gr. B. Gotta love the 80's drama music! :D

it looks very stable/capable off road, much more than i'd expect a vintage kit to be [>:]

Wow and I missed this build....glad I found it. I love the way this car is made, but part support would have been a pain.
These things go for a whooping 400-500 dollars on ebay, and that's for an opened used one too.[X(]

It was pretty much ahead its time in 1986!

Update:

I have a new set of original 'Rothmans' decals on the way, together with a slightly used set of wheels, fresh Rally block tires and a NIB Tamiya front stabilizer set. Another money pit, waaheyyy!! :D
The restoration can begin now. I have successfully tested the brakefluid-paint-stripping-method on my Saper Sabre project. DOT4 brakefluid doesn't react with the lexan, but dissolves even multiple layers of lexan paint. DOT3 shoud work even better, but haven't tested yet.

Some more action shots from TC: Great seeing it still getting used!
Pic #3 shows the need for a front stabilizer kit! [>:]

Did you find the original body yet?

Dante77 07-27-2008 03:17 PM

RE: The holy grail: Tamiya Porsche 959 4WD restoration thread

It has an original body in good shape I'm going to strip and repaint. NIB bodies are insanely expensive.

have you read the instruction manual, instead of using decals, the old way was to use Tamiya 'PC' paint, like 8+ different colours! crazy! [:'(]

RE: The holy grail: Tamiya Porsche 959 4WD restoration thread

Yeah, It's gonna be a tough paint job. At least the red and golden stripes are decals!

i think the PC paint comes in small pots, so its not as expensive as buying PS or TS paint.

Cool that celica was kicking the tail out just perfectly !

Dante77 Is a really nice car... I too would be tempted to shelf queen it !

Yes, but I would never brush-paint a body! [:@] So its gonna be PS except of course for the tiny rear lights and other details.

Some progress:

I gathered all the parts I need to start the restoration.
I was lucky to source some new tires really cheap in a LHS (the guy thought he was lucky to finally sell these old tires which hang on the wall for 20 years now! :D)
Bought some used rims in a not so good condition, and a used set in a really good condition. I think I have enough wheels / tires now, lol!
And finally the NIB front stabilizer set.

Lets get cracking!

Looks like a nice basher body! Owner must be from the U.K. , they are all crazy about those Ford Escorts.

any progress on this?

RE: The holy grail: Tamiya Porsche 959 4WD restoration thread

Unfortunately not! [:o]

I have two other projects going on at the moment. Plus I haven't gathered the guts to strip the precious shell.
But there will be more to come soon!

If you are going to run it buy the kamtec shell for bashing. Save the original for display. It did come with some bearings but you will need some kyosho mini-z bearings to complete the set.

Dante77 09-09-2008 04:22 PM

RE: The holy grail: Tamiya Porsche 959 4WD restoration thread

Yes, I think it needs like 187 850 Bearings, lol!

It will never leave the shelf, though.

Hi, I'm looking for new tyres and for Celica wheels, will you sell to me your tires or you know where to find them??? Thank you very much!

All sold, sorry! Those tires are really hard to come by. I'd say ebay is your best bet.

Thank you! Do you know if there's any SET from Tamiya with tyre+wheel for Celica Gr.B or Porsche 959?

Does anyone else think the Celica wheels (white) would look better with the paint job of the Porsche?

The Porsche (as always) has the sexier body design than Toyota. Porsches were streamlined even when the fad was boxy.
