still not sure how im going to approch this, the tranny was in tip top shape (uses srt, eagle, pede rusty bandit gears), and really despite the dirt everything was in pretty good shape, even the bushings were almost wear free! i do plan on dropping in all n-rusty stuff like hub carriers and front axles along with mip cvds and a few other things besides. i may or may not drop in a nitro rustler tranny since with the stocker and a new engine it wont have breaks (who needs them anyway) also for the body im thinking muscle but still undecided, if you think of a good body that fits this car post it up!

im going to soak everything in my super secret mix of tide and hot water tomorrow and see if i cant get through the thicker layers of grime...

today

the bath worked great, scrubed ttt every ttt single ttt part ttt and ttt screw

this thing has been a pain to build, took close to half the day to get this far and i have not even got to breaking down the shocks or cracking open the engine. i did get the steering done, the tranny is done and in great shape. i need stuff though, screws, bearings, and an mip cvd part (all i need is one stupid peice to get them assembled) got the nitro rustler front knuckles and carriers dropped in place of the old 1932 and 1637 style assembly (along with the propper length hinge pin and some new e-clips)

anyway heres pics

im waiting on dropping in the tranny till i can either get the TRX .12 to run again or till i get an n-rusty tranny dropped in its place

RE: Nitro Hawk build

That's not an image 12, its a trx 12. The image 12 has a round head (blue or polished silver) and only has "image" cast into one side and "12" in other side, the image carb resembles an early OS one needle airplane carb, not a trx series carb.

good to know, first stab at nitro as well as a full restoration since i left for boot camp in october (sold my half working gt' a few months before)

RE: Nitro Hawk build

Cool build and, thanks for helping me identify an RC I have that I got in a trade deal. The one I have is basically trashed looks like it was put through a meat grinder then patched with sheet metal(Literally). Maybe there is a little hope for mine as now I know a N Rusty tranny will work in place of the original. It is wrecked...... And, the spur has seen better days as well. I have a search key now maybe I can score another chassis plate on flEaBay.

RE: Nitro Hawk build

a lot of parts are interchangeablse between the different traxxas chassis, those rear arms are slash/n-rusty arms and the steering assembly is the same from like 4 different electric models. the tranny gears in thisre-released version are the same as the new breed of 1/10th 2wd trucks from trx

the one thing i must warn you about if you plan to restore and run it is plastic rc parts dont hold up well to the test of time

Yet more good useable info. The steering assembly on this Hawk is very sloppy and has to much play in it. Leave it to Traxxas to not over complicate everything by having to redesign the gearing and every little detail on thier RC's That keeps us Vintage RC junkies in parts. Thanks for the info.

Oh yea as I have found..... I ruined an RC I bought and built new years ago by not thinking of just that. Just because it could take those kinds of hits then by no way means it will now.

You can tell by looking at the Hawk the arms look VERY brittle, and could snap just looking at them. They appear to have some cracking as it is. The rc's I got along with this one sat in a shed for years before I wound up with them. So being the types of conditions they were stored in I'll bet the arms will have to be replaced. Looks like this thing is really just good for parts as bad as it is. I have NEVER seen one in such rigged conditions. I bash mine spiritedly but, I dont bash them to death. Kind of makes me wonder just what I'll find restoring the others I got from him?.....

RE: Nitro Hawk build

Well, I did post up a thread about one of the RC's but it never got any interest. Not a big deal though don't seem to be many of them around any more. I broke the drive belt on it today and I have searched till I cant stand looking, for a source to get one. LOL like you said earlier in this very thread you have to take into consideration the fact that parts are worn or getting brittle.

That one in perticular is a Delta P4 with an OPS engine. Oddly enough it runs very strong as old as it is. I also got an Associated RC 500 but, it is missing a lot of parts.

As far as sending it your way. You couldn't POSSIBLY treat it any worse than it has been even if you drop kicked it off of a cliff. I will get a pic of it as soon as I can get out to my friends place and retreive it plus the others. Words can't really put into perspective how jacked up the chassis is..... The only one I have on hand at the moment is the P4.

RE: Nitro Hawk build

if your bashing it i would highly recomend the nrustler tranny because of one simple fact you can still get parts for it

RE: Nitro Hawk build

the stock tranny gears in my nitro hawk are the same as the rustler, pede, srt, slash, bandit, etc

got the tank mounted after i got back from the track and a buddy loaned me his O.S. CV-R .12 so i tried fitting the engine, not good, maybe if i dropped in a tigerdrive and or went with a newer trx.15 with the longer shaft.

this build has really been kicking my butt, took a good hour to just mount the rear shocks. the whole rear end was missing all the screws and a bunch of stuff besides.

il get pics up in a bit, tired from holding my dx2.0 all day, its hard to be a racer:rolleyes:

also, i think im going to mount a hpi ford (ewww) bronco body, i think it will look pretty fly:D

get some stock aluminum and drill/tap screw holes in it, that will make it simple to mount any engine to the chassis. If you go with the motor in your pictures, it looks like you won't have a brake....not like you had a brake with the stock setup...crappy stock drum brake doesn't do much anyway. You have the old motor which has the proper crankshaft. Why not buy a pro 15 and put this crank in it? Then the whole clutch assembly will transfer over and it will run like the stock setup.

I have an old hawk, bought it in the early 90's when they came out. I drive it regularly with the original pro 15. Good times.

Here are a couplepictures ofmy baby. Keep us posted on your progress. I painted those front rims that nasty dark red back in 1992, not a good choice, but I'm sticking with it. Had to buy new rear rims because I tore up the old ones.

RE: Nitro Hawk build

well if anything else yours looks well loved;)

yeah, ive been thinking about it, the problem is i want to race this bugger and make it like my srt, top of the line and great performance!

yeah, if i use the cv-r pictured i would have to use a nitro rustler tranny with the built in breaks. i could go stock, trying to bring the poor rusted trx .12 back to life would be easier without question. just time consuming

RE: Nitro Hawk build

TRX .15 internals will work in the TRX .12, but you need the .15 head. Image .12 does not apply.

RE: Nitro Hawk build

yeah, im still trying to work it all out.

we'll see said the blind man[8D]

RE: Nitro Hawk build

Don't swap the motor... the trx 12 is gutless, but they are nearly as rare as the image 12's.

FieroMan121 04-24-2010 11:24 PM

RE: Nitro Hawk build

well id like to but at this point i just want to see it run under its own power, i may cheat and get a trx .15 with the long crank and bolt on the clutch and endbell

the bl conversion is looking more and more tempting but ive already got like 5 electric 1/10th st's so i really have rejected it

RE: Nitro Hawk build

well no progress whatsoever i posted it in the rc marketplace so if you like what you saw you can have it

RE: Nitro Hawk build

well i got bored while cleaning my rs4mt so i decided to tackle the engine on this bugger and it seems that all is not lost, the bearings, depite the surface rust, seem to roll good enough but i will replace them regardless. the crank shaft is also rusty but not beyond serviceable. the piston and sleeve are also in pretty good shape, maybe if i could find a chemical that breaks up rust that isnt wd40 i might be able to get everything running.

ill update after i do some homework on which parts are compatible with the trx .15

All parts should be compatible with the trx15, even the sleeve. Its the same engine block, just with a different little emblem on the side.

RE: Nitro Hawk build

My friend had the nitro street (although the body on his didn't look that sharp), while I had the nitro hawk... we ran those things for years. Went through piles of tires. We would literally dig through each others houses and parents cars looking for change so we could buy more fuel. I have been looking for a good condition one to restore for a while, but one with a blue image engine.

RE: Nitro Hawk build

you could pick up a nitro hawk and mount the shorter bandit rear arms or sledgehammer arms all around and pick up the buggy shocks

I know the white sledgehammer arms are the same size, but finding the blue buggy shocks would be a bit harder... also finding an image .12 separately will be nearly impossible. I just need to surf ebay at least once a week.
